I just read a book called the Fortune Cookie Chronicles by Jennifer 8 Lee. It was really really well written and fascinating. I love food histories so the aspect of the book delving into who invented the fortune cookie and many other Chinese American dishes was great. The author also goes into the current and past history of immigrants in the United States, a subject I've been exposed to more so lately due to my job. Great read and recommended by me (if that means anything, heh).
I'm currently reading a memoir about a man who grew up in the 40s outside my home town. Lately I've been trying to hunt down history on Lake County that isn't dry. I have this book and a book called Netting the Sun that I'm reading. The memoir is pretty interesting though not necessarily a fast read.
I also recently read a book called Girl Bomb which was interesting, a memoir by a woman about her teenage years in New York City. From the cover and the description, it seems like a book about her time being homeless in New York after running away from home but that's just a part of it. It basically describes her teen years in a very honest and sometimes brutal way. And I found it interesting (along with well written) since it is so the opposite of anything I could have ever let myself experience as a teenager.
