A good point is made in the comments that almost all the livestock in America carry plastic tags pierced through their ears.

They're ears are thicker and more able to support the tags though and earrings are usually pretty thin so they'd go through the kitten's ears easily.

Meh. They don't look any better than 16 ga. which isn't great. The weight of those things would cause all kinds of problems too. I still think there is a difference between a properly done ID tag and what's going on with those kittens.

In America. For the first one, anyway. It's seen as pretty barbaric in the rest of the world (rightfully so) and I'm pretty sure you'd get at least a fine for doing that or ears in other places.
Babies getting their ears pierced is completely different, but is also asinine.

As for the OP, six months is not nearly enough time.
