More anecdata, but our dog was adopted from a shelter when he was two. They said that he had been brought in because his previous owner couldn't get him to get along with an existing dog in the household.

I told them I had a cat and they said that he had never exhibited aggression around cats that they knew about. He was very sweet and seemed kind of shy, and he had been brought in, adopted out, and then brought in a second time. He needed a permanent home. So, I adopted him.

For the first couple weeks he was all about chasing the cat. After a few slaps from the cat and redirection from me, he actually started to like the cat. Then we had to take in my mom's two cats and he took to them almost right away. He loves all 3 of them now and they all play together, but if we go outside and he sees a random cat or dog or squirrel or leaf, he's all about chasing and barking and trying to get it. So, it seems that he still has a major urge to chase anything and everything smaller AND larger than he is, but when it comes to the boys he lives with? He's all about the love.

My icon is him with the first cat he learned to love. They're the closest of all. And fwiw, he's a chihuahua/miniature pinscher mix.
