Busy Week

Hello again,

It's been a busy week. Monday through Thursday was mainly doing work, writing papers, and planning our trip over Reading week, November 7-12 or something. It sounds like we're going to try to go on a three day tour of Ireland, then stay in Dublin for a night or two, then go to London for two nights, then York for the weekend. That's the plan so far, we'll see.

Thursday night, Anna from Potsdam came up. The four of us, Tom, Jen, Annn, and I went to the Tudor Inn, of course and then went to Lafferty's. Anna and I had plenty of catching up to do, and it was a beautiful night. Friday Anna and I layed around for a while, being lazy, then went to get some lunch before the rest of the gang was to arrive. We met up with Colin and Jenny later that afternoon. We decided that the five of us would all go out to a nice dinner, St. Andrews has some nice places, but most of it is average food, for the price we can afford. Anyway, we went to this place called Little John's, the food was so-so, and the service was terrible. We had this boy that looked about 16 and was ridiculously awkward, I feel like we might have been his first table to wait on. He came by to take our plates from dinner and he says, 'have you finished your main course then?', seriously inquring, and it was pretty obvious we'd been done for like half an hour. Besides, as Jenny puts it, 'we'd all but licked our plates'. LJ's did have a redeeming quality that they give students 20% off on their entire meal! So that worked out. That night we decided to head to Lafferty's because it has a nice atmosphere and usually has room for a group of 5 to sit. We invade this poor couple's table, oh well, and are enjoying ourselves, when who should walk in? But 8 Irish men, from Northern Ireland. They seemed pretty tipsy already, and at first we were like oh no, this is going to be a long night. Of course, they sit down next to us. And, being the friendliest group of five young people you'll ever meet..., they talk to us. They were hysterical, bought us all drinks all night long. They told funny stories and one of them played the Guitar the whole night, playing whatever anyone wanted, naturally we sang along to all of them. He works for the BBC, has his own show, you can look him up, he's legitimate, name's George Jones. They were all very nice though, on a Holiday to play golf all weekend. We asked them how their game went? They all answered, 'shite', naturally. None the less it was an eventfull evening, one of the best nights here so far. So we planned to meet them there the next night, not really thinking it would work out.

Saturday, the five of us go to a little Market in one of the church squares. It was pretty neat, fresh fish, and meats, fudge!, candles, all homemade stuff like that. It was neat to see the locals out at it, and I guess it's the only one of this season? So we're lucky in that regard. After that we went to Le Rusique for lunch, only to be horribly disappointed by the fact that they had changed their fries! I, because I could not let it go, asked them why? Our waiter, Dracula, explained that they had to change to the winter potatos, bummer. So should any of you ever go to St. Andrews and eat at Le Rustique, eat the fries made with the summer potatos, word to the wise. So then the four of us, Jen went back to the Hall, went to the Castle/Cathedral/Tower. I had already done this, but it was another great day, so I didn't mind going again. It was a really windy day, and the waves were pretty out of control, so that was nice too. We walked around that end of town, and went to the pier as well. This is the pier that all the students of St. Andrews walk on in their scarlet robes, at dawn. Pretty neat. It was absolutely freezing all the way out there though. I was wishing I had brought my mittens. We get tea in a little place Jen and I like, Missy and Dora liked it too, good hot chocolate. After that we dress for dinner and head out again. For dinner we went to the Pizza Express, it was the shortest wait, and we all know how much I love pizza. We took lots of good pictures, many ridiculous. Of course I had chocolate cake for dessert, mmmmm. Then we headed to Lafferty's for another night of music with our Irish friends. Much to our surprise, pleasantly so, they were there waiting for us. We sang a lot again, they bought all our drinks again, it was a great night. George is going to make a shout out to us on his show sometime. The rest of them are policemen, or retired policemen. I think their ages would be like 35ish-60ish, and eclectic group of people. But very genuine people, it was nice to meet some really interesting people.

Today, the five of us went to the golf course, I finally got THE picture on the bridge. I'll put that on the computer soon, and be sending it out. Be sure to send me your email address if you want the pictures, vaughn26@potsdam.edu. Then we went down by the water some more, but it was too cold and raining too hard to stay long. We had a late breakfast and tea, and the Vic Cafe and brought Jenny and Colin to the bus station. Anna left a little while after. It was a fantastic weekend, great to see some friends from school where we have a history together, not too say that Jen isn't great. I'm sure you all know what I mean. They all seem to being doing well, and loving it here. It's really crazy to be here, sometimes it still surprises me that I did it.

So today, lots of work to do. I have to get it all done, another busy week and weekend next week. It sounds like I will be going to Birmingham Thursday night, and then going to Wales with Jenny and Colin for the weekend. It should be a wonderful time, I'm really excited about being able to get to Wales. Afterall it is my heritage right!? I hope to find some neat things with 'Vaughn' on them, such a tourist. Well, I hope all is well wherever you all are. I miss the little aspects of fall in CNY, it's a much colder fall here than I'm used to, but it shouldn't get too much colder. Keep in touch all, miss you.

Love,
Cate
