Affiliation: Breeder

Personality:

If you were only just meeting her, you might think Sakaki is a cold person. She rarely speaks, and she uses few words when she does. Her normal facial expression is cold and intimidating, as well. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Sakaki looks cold, yes, but that's just accidental, and the reason she's so taciturn is that she's shy. In truth, Sakaki is an awkward, soft-hearted lover of cute things who just has a tendency to be misunderstood. It's only when she makes some friends that see the real her that she's able to show her softer side.

I mentioned above that Sakaki loves cute things, and I can't stress that enough; it's a major facet of her personality. She absolutely adores all manner of animals, cats especially. Unfortunately, cats don't seem to like her, and she's constantly getting bitten when she tries to pet them. But no matter how many times she gets her hand chomped, Sakaki will never give up trying to win those kitty-cats over. She also wishes she were cute herself, but she's tall and curvy and would look ridiculous with adorable ribbons in her hair. It's a subject of great consternation to her.

Outside of her love for cuteness, Sakaki is a calm, quiet girl who generally goes with the flow. She's not especially competitive, but when Tomo or Kagura challenge her to a race, she'll generally go along with it with only a touch of reluctance. And when she is competing, even if she isn't particularly invested in winning, she'll give it her all. To do anything less wouldn't be honest. She's sometimes the voice of reason in their little group -- or at least she would be if she would speak up. And she serves as a sort of big sister to 10-year-old high-schooler Chiyo, protecting her and trying to cheer her up when she needs it.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ Sakaki is very athletically gifted. She regularly wins races against her classmates, does well in gym class, and in one late episode when she gets really determined, she goes from last place in the relay to first. It seems to come naturally to her.
+ She's intelligent and is shown to do pretty well in class (especially in comparison to a certain trio of classmates). About B+ range, I'd say.
+ Sakaki is kind and very loyal to her friends. Treat her well and you've earned a friend for life -- and if you're in trouble, she'll jump to your defense.
+ She can also be very determined, too. She's hesitant at times, but once she makes a decision, she will stick by it and do her best to see it through to the end.

- Cats hate Sakaki. I mean, like, a lot. She regularly gets bitten, shoved around, and otherwise abused simply for trying to pet them. Maybe it's because of her sometimes scary-looking face? Hard to say.
- Sakaki can occasionally get distracted and zone out when her imagination gets away from her, and especially when she's been confronted by a very cute mental image. She's no Osaka, but it happens several times over the course of the series.
- She's very awkward in social situations, unless it's around close friends. If she doesn't know what to say, she probably won't say anything at all. And her normal expression is pretty easy to misinterpret as unfriendly or stern.
- Sakaki has some really bad body image issues. She's always wanted to be small and cute, but instead she's huge and overdeveloped (or that's the way she sees herself, anyway). The easiest way to make her uncomfortable is to comment on her body or her height.

Samples

First Person Sample:

[The Pokégear's video feed kicks in, displaying the face of a young lady with long black hair. She fidgets with the Pokégear slightly, and it's several seconds before she finally figures out what she wants to say.]

Does anyone know... how to get a Pokémon to like you better? Someone suggested giving him berries, so I tried that. And I made sure to heal him after he got hurt. And I walk with him every day.

[She looks down at her hand, which has been freshly bandaged.]

It doesn't... seem to help.

[A long, rather awkward pause.]

That's... all I needed to ask. [With that, she cuts the feed.]

Third Person Sample:

She had woken up in an unfamiliar bedroom in an unfamiliar house with an unfamiliar mother who had thrown her out into the streets... but Sakaki had mostly calmed down by now. She wasn't the type to dwell on misfortune for long. She had to just do what she could from here.

And honestly, part of her was a little excited. She'd never played any of the games before, but she'd seen other kids play them, and caught an episode or two of the TV show... Some of those Pokémon were so cute. And now she would get a chance to see them up close! Maybe they'd even let her pet them...

Sakaki carefully went through the backpack she'd been given. Some clothing and various toiletries... She seemed to recall the games revolving around exploration and travel, so she'd need these. A pair of guidebooks... She'd make sure she studied these very carefully. Something that looked like a handheld phone or computer...

And there were six Poké Balls nestled together as well. Slowly, as if it might run away if she moved too quickly, Sakaki reached into the backpack to pick one up. She could tell that this one wasn't empty. She'd been given a Pokémon to start her off? Almost tingling with anticipation, she threw the ball down in front of her... and a cream-colored cat appeared, standing on two legs. "Meowth!" it exclaimed.

"Ah!" The happy exclamation escaped Sakaki's mouth without her realizing it. It was some kind of cat! And it was so, so cute, with its big eyes and wide toothy grin. Immediately she knelt in front of the little Pokémon, holding out her hand to it. "Hello," she whispered hopefully. "I'm your new trainer..."

"Meowth..." The cat gradually padded over to Sakaki, sniffing her outstretched hand curiously...

And then, with a growl, biting it.

"...Ah."
