20 days and counting in this most recent open warfare between Israel and Hamas. I watch the news coverage and according to the Gaza health ministry over a thousand people have died, 40% women and children. I listen as Israel is castigated for "disproportionate response". I am deeply frustrated as everyone heaps outrage on Israel. I understand that more Palestinians have died then Israelis. But Israel has only responded to constant rocket attacks on its people. How long would other countries sit idly by and let their people be random targets for a regime who has stated they want them wiped off the earth? How long would the populous live in fear without crying out and demanding a devastating reply?
Don't misunderstand I don't think Israel is free of blame I just don't understand why people only look at this conflict from the side of Gaza. Where is the outrage against Hamas? Look around and you won't really see any. Israel had withdrawn from Gaza but Hamas wasn't satisfied. Hamas decided it had the right to demand Israel open it's border crossings; however it refused to make any assurances that it wouldn't send suicide bombers through those crossings. Gaza also shares a border with Egypt yet Hamas didn't demand that be opened. Why should it be okay for Hamas to make demands of Israel? Hamas speaks constantly of an Islamic Brotherhood yet it doesn't ask it's "brother" Egypt to open it's border? I know this is probably because Egypt completely rejects Hamas and it's ideology and that wouldn't look good to the Gazan public.
I don't really support Israel. I think it has gone too far. But I think Hamas just pushed and pushed until Israel snapped. I think Israel is determined to strike a blow that Hamas really feels and will make it think twice before firing rockets into Israel. Unfortunately, the enemy can and does melt into the general populace and uses them as a shield. But Israel is enraged and strikes out hard regardless of the innocent civilians caught in the middle. When a defense minister says the country is "holding back because it could have carpet bombed the area" instead of invading; it is a sign the country has completely lost control of its temper. I hope eventually people see Hamas is just as much to blame as Israel.
