As I finish Fallout 3 I am left wanting. Fallout 2 was one of the first RPGs I cut my teeth on. My husband played it separately and while we both played the goody goody we had totally different ways of solving the various challenges.
Maybe that is one of the reasons that 3 bothered me so much at times. The game starts out with you being forced to leave your vault and out in the Wastes you go for good or for ill. This is reminiscent of the first Fallout. However the changes were a little jarring. In the previous installments Fallout was a 2-D sort of squad fighter with a great story. Now it is more of a first person shooter. You can pick up other people along the way if you want them but I found they were frequently running in front of my gunfire instead of lending support fire of their own.
Fairly early on in the game you get to start making decisions that can effect your karma. I really can't comment on the darker side of the game as I played a good character ending up the last, best hope for the Wastes. I must admit I really like that title. It was a little strange though as NPCs sometime s responded to your karma by giving you items at random. Interesting little piece of programming there. Your karma didn't really seem to effect much. Good characters were often still very standoffish regardless of the fact that I had the highest karma. The radio broadcast the great deeds I did but no one seemed to care. Negative characters had no problems coming to me with quests that I refused to do.
We made the game last as long as we could by finishing every quest we could find that wouldn't besmirch our karma. There didn't seem to be as many quests as there were before but maybe that is just the glow of memory.
Sometimes it was fun to just wander the wastes seeing what you could find. Mostly though out exploring was in search of the illusive bobbleheads. The bobbleheads are great as they raise your stats by one or skills one raise them by 10 points. I thought they were a great way to make people explore. Even with online guides you need to look hard to find them.
The thing that really bothered me though was the ending. At the end of Fallout 1 & 2, a movie at the end of the game showed how what you did effected the world; how it changed and the consequences of your actions. There is a movie at the end of the game but it only covers how you completed the main quest. I wish they had put a little more time into that detailed kind of ending.
