I've dipped my toes- some of them, anyway- back into the waters of the violin. It's an exciting and scary time. I've got some lofty repertoire goals and some technical hurdles to work out (jes' workin' the turkey through), but this time it's for me, and not to further the cause of fame or glory or college and career.
It's ultimately about the Bach Chaconne, from his second Partita for solo violin. At this point in my life I can listen to it- look at the score- and understand what's going on. I know what the voices are doing and why they move the way they move; I can even speak at a pretty rarified level about the connections between the d minor Partita and some of Bach's cantatas (notably Christ lag in Todesbanden.
But I can't play it. Well, actually, I can, but not in any sort of refined, polished way.
Yet.
But today is the first step of that thousand-mile journey.
