I can't believe it's almost my birthday again. Nineteen isn't all that exciting once you've hit eighteen, and you still have a couple of years to go before you can legally drink. I'm not sure what I'll be doing this year, but if I end up having a get together, I'll be sure to put up an invitation for my friends.

What do you want for your birthday?

Is a happy ending too much to ask for?

Yes. I was hoping for something tangible.

There are tangible things that go along with happy endings. Not that I'm suggesting you get a ring or anything.

...

You want to be engaged?

... I said I wasn't suggesting that you get a ring!

That just means you are!

... You'd want to?

We've been together a long time here. Even if we aren't actually together right now, I was just saying, you never know what will happen in the future. Right? Right.

You'd want to be engaged to me. And... and married.

Why do you keep asking that? You remember that future we both saw and experienced, don't you? I wouldn't ever say no to being able to have that.

You could say no because it's me.

And yet I'm letting you stay in my apartment, and I brought you to the New Year's party with me. I think I got over the fact that you're you a long time ago, otherwise we never would have had sex in the first place.

You could change your mind. Nothing is permanent.

Except for the fact that we'll probably still be standing long after everyone else around has died.

I thought that was what you wanted me to feel and think. Did I actually find a topic that scares you, Sylar?
