Episode 1.41 - "Sure, I'll join your cult"

Oct 27, 2005 18:41

That was my immediate response to Jaimie's invitation to attend a SOAR (another acronym I'm clueless about) meeting in the Chapel basement earlier this afternoon via FaceBook. 'Cause really, what are friends for?

I scurried over to the chapel only to find Jaimie there lurking in the shadows, ready to guide me to the secret location downstairs. "It's not a cult," she would insist, but what did I see when I walked into SOAR HQ?

A HUMUNGOUS poster of Carson Kressley; y'know, the fashion expert from Queer Eye For The Straight Guy as well as a Gettysburg College graduate, behind an altar of scented candles. Turns out SOAR is the school's Gay-Straight Alliance. *smacks forehead* Duh! Their choice of decor was a bit questionable, with a giant rainbow flag, some printouts of Abercrombie & Fitch ads, as well as some magazine promos for The L Word and of course, Queer As Folk.

I happened to be wearing my uber-awesome body lights that day, so I'd say I blended in quite well. However, when Debra pointed out to everyone that you could see the strobe lights through my shirt if you looked really close, EVERYONE (even the faculty advisor) simultaneously craned their necks and stared at my chest in awe. Eye-Rape! Oh well, I'm used to that by now.

While I was there I met Bryan Bosworth's twin, G-Morgan; he's got the glasses, the face, the physique, the clothes, the fondness of big words. I guess the only real difference would be his poofy hair and infatuation with Jake Gyllenhaal. Also at the meeting I saw Travis (guy from GIV DAY), who bears more than a passing resemblance to me; I also saw Mark and Ming. Tanya and I had already gone to the nightclub together in a group, but now I actually know her name.

Anywho, SOAR's planning the annual Drag Queen Contest which is supposedly a very popular event on campus. It should be good stuff. The only strange thing about the members was their taste in movies--they kept going on about the new Jake Gyllenhaal/Heath Ledger movie, Brokeback Mountain, the gay cowboy drama. For our SOAR film night, I'll bring some old favorites that I think we'll all enjoy: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and of course, Showgirls, the funniest movie of all time.

Overall, this cult was so much more fun than those crazy Christians. No s'mores, but hey, I don't mind. I'm already a member and I think it'll just be fun hanging out with Jaimie 'cause that girl is insane... but in such a great way. Really, there never could have been a club like that at Northeast Senior High. *shakes head* When I got back to the dorm, our Huber Soccer Team (Mark, Andrew, etc) just came back covered in mud after a big loss. Afterwards, there was a shower party... yes, that's right, with Michael Jackson music blasting in the bathroom. What an interesting day.
