Well it's a brand new year and with it comes the twitch reaction to make promises you either won't keep or struggle through. This year for myself is no exception. My resolution is no Added Sugar, Alcohol, News Media, Facebook, Stumbleupon, or any other of my attention vices for one month. The sugar and Alcohol are easy in comparison to my online addictions because I am literally online for the better amount of waking hours in a day either at my desk or on my iPhone. The news media especially is difficult since I have such a high interest in politics and current events. However I have been feeling completely over saturated with useless information which only serve to incapacitate me from doing other more productive things.
Yesterday was my first full day of no timewasting media and I have to admit throughout the entire day when my mind wandered, like and addict my first instinct was to check facebook, or CBC news. I noticed that when I have a thought or feeling it's almost formatted to fit in a facebook status update, and when I realized after that split second that no I am not doing the facebook for a month I just sort of chucked in amusement because of how habitual information media has become in my life. I was going to go one step further and lend out my XBOX 360 to a friend but Johnson said that I would likely go insane if I didn't have a Zombie outlet. He's probably right. On top of that I just signed up for my one month free trial of Netlfix so I wouldn't want to waste that. Although there isn't a huge selection of blockbuster hits there is a good amount of movies and documentaries which I find interesting. Last night I watched the rise and fall of the Greek Empire while cleaning and organizing my room. I also bought a legitimate copy of windows 7 Professional through a student discount because the hacked version was eventually found out by Microsoft and kept popping up ensuring I knew of it every 5 minutes and disabled some features. So that took a while since I had to install Windows XP first and then upgrade to Windows 7 Professional through the upgrade option. I am finally just about back to 100% on my computer and it does feel rather nice to have legitimate software. When I installed the hacked version I always had in the back of my mind the thought of when it would be remotely disabled by Microsoft.
Another resolution I want to do this year is have a file server up and running with the capabilities of hosting websites. A friend of mine has given me a complete computer minus the motherboard which I found online and will be replacing shortly. I will likely run Ubuntu server on it since it has a GUI interface while I practice how to interface with the non-GUI terminal.
I have been completely obsessed with the soundtrack for Tron: Legacy for the past two days. I saw it in IMAX 3D on Sunday and really want to see it again, this time in 2D so I can have a clearly more crisp visual experience. Likely I will be doing that later on tonight if I am not feeling to sickly.
My marks from last semester came back on Christmas day no doubt. Although they weren't as high as I would have liked I am moderately satisfied. I was in danger of failing one of my exams so I was happy that I passed above what I would have expected if I just slipped by. This semester should be a lot better since it's mostly lab courses which I seem to excel in.
Looking forward to the new year and hoping I will not dissolve into a pile of mush by fighting my automated urges to ingest information media.
