Ianto felt dazed.

He could hear Tosh and Jack yelling, could see them standing before him, but everything felt blurred and muffled, like he was standing in the middle of a blizzard.

“I didn’t mean for this to happen! It was never meant to be this way!”

That was Jack, finally finding his voice.

“Well it did, Jack. And there’s no one but yourself to blame,” Tosh spat, “And you want to know something? I always looked up to you, respected you. Now I don’t even recognize the man before me.”

Jack looked stricken, shoulders hunched over like he was taking a punch to the gut, “I’m so sorry, Toshiko. I’m just… I’m sorry.”

“I’m not the one who needs the apology, Jack.”

Then Tosh turned and walked out of the office without another word.

Ianto suddenly felt very uncomfortable - Tosh had been like a buffer, but with her gone it was just him and Jack, alone.

So he did the only thing he could think of, “Tea, sir?”

Jack grimaced and turned away from him.

He didn’t know what do to - he was just standing there, arm thrust out with the cup in hand.

Should he leave? Should he stay?

“Ianto…” Jack sounded weary, and it was a tone of voice that Ianto never attributed to him before, “I need to tell you something.”

“Alright, Sir…”

Jack spun back around towards him, eyes pleading, “Don’t you think we can drop the “sir,” Ianto?”

Ianto just gaped; it always seemed as if Jack enjoyed being called “sir.” In fact, Ianto could remember more than one night when-

No, no he wasn’t going to think about that. Not now, not ever. That was over, done. Another life, practically.

“As you wish.”

Jack gave a sigh, almost of release, then spoke again, “We need to talk about what happened. About what I’ve done.”

It’s my fault it’s my fault it’s my fault.

“It wasn’t you; I was the one who was mistaken. I’m sorry that I’ve caused so much trouble.”

“No!” Jack cried, “Don’t say that! Please, Ianto, don’t say that!”

Again, Ianto had the feeling like he was in the middle of a snowstorm - lost and confused, unsure of his footing or what was going to happen.

“But it’s true. Our relationship… It was never -- never real. I understand that now.”

Jack sat heavily in the chair and seemed to cave in on himself.

Ianto had never seen him like this before - so open to the world and brazen with his emotions.

Then he heard Jack whispering to himself in a voice full of anguish, “What have I done? What have I done?”

He looked up at Ianto with tear filled eyes and said, “I am so sorry, Ianto. I’ll never forgive myself for hurting you and somehow, someway, I’m going to find a way to make it better. Somehow, I’m going to redeem myself. Can you trust me to do that?”

And Ianto couldn’t help himself. He whispered, “Yes.”
