Genre: General/Humor

Version: Anime

Rating: G

“Mommy come play with me!” Ikuko felt a small tug on the hem of her skirt, diverting her attention away from the boxes she was sorting through to a little girl of about three years accompanied by a stuffed purple dinosaur approximately twice her size.

“Usagi, Mommy has to do this right now.”

“But you don’t look like you having fun Mommy. Don’t you want to play with me?” Her blue eyes began to glimmer, and Ikuko knew what was coming. She quickly bent down and gathered the child in her arms.

“Don’t cry darling, of course I want to play with you. But if I don’t get some of Daddy’s old photography junk out of this house Mommy won’t be here for very much longer!” Ikulo laughed, but Usagi clung to her more tightly.

“No Mommy! I no let Daddy’s bad junk take you away! I save you!” Ikuko watched in surprise as her daughter’s tear-stained face morphed to an expression of firm determination. Usagi extracted herself from her mother’s embrace and, plucking the toy reptile off of the floor, toddled her way to the tower of cardboard boxes Ikuko was in the process of going through. Holding the dinosaur over her odangos by its tail like a club, Usagi declared “You can’t have my Mommy! In the name of Barney I punish you!” And before Ikuko could utter a single word of protest the toddler twirled Barney in a semi-circle and smashed him into the stack of boxes. Instinctively Ikuko pulled her child to her chest as the oncoming cascade of outdated and broken tripods, cameras, and magazines fell around the pair.

When the chaos subsided Ikuko gently set Usagi down and asked “Are you alright?”

“I fine! Now Mommy no have to worry about Daddy’s junk taking you away!” she grinned.

Ikuko looked in dismay at the mess Usagi’s “rescue” had created. The two hours she had spent meticulously picking through Kenji’s old things, deciding what could be donated or thrown away were completely wasted. “Usagi attacking Daddy’s stuff is not the way to get rid of it! Now take Barney and go play quietly while I clean this up!”

Usagi hung her head and dragged Barney across the dusty floor, her euphoria from defeating the clutter dissipated by Ikuko’s anger. Searching for something to entertain herself and cheer her mother up, Usagi creaked open an ancient wooden chest in the corner of the attic.

Ikuko stood up, brushing the dirt off of her skirt as she surveyed her handiwork. She smiled at the three heavy duty black garbage bags stuffed to the brim. It turned out that Usagi’s battle had inflicted so much damage on Kenji’s boxes that the only thing Ikuko could do was trash them. Kenji was such a pack rat; he could never bring himself to throw anything away and Ikuko was elated at the excuse to do so. She could actually walk around the attic now!

“Mommy look at Barney and me!” Ikuko turned around to see her three year old decked out in a very familiar white dress and rhinestone crown, waltzing with a plum dinosaur wearing a black top hat and cape, topped off with a white elastic banded mask. The awkward partners twirled around until the too-long hem caught under Usagi’s foot, bringing them crashing to the ground. Usagi sat up, her crown dangling precariously off one globe-shaped bun and beamed up at her mother. “Do you think I can be a real princess one day Mommy?”

Ikuko tried to keep a straight face, but the sight of her daughter and stuffed animal sprawled across the floor in her and Kenji’s prom clothes was too much to bear. She collapsed beside Usagi, giggling while she straightened the tiara. “You have a long way to go my dear.”

I had entirely too much fun with this. Don't ask how Barney got involved, it just sort of happened. I guess I had to infuse a tiny bit of my childhood into Usagi's. I apologize for any disturbing images of Barney as Tuxedo Mask this fic may have caused, but I hope you liked it anyway!
