Zayne's parent's house, Phaeda, Thursday night [FHT]

Jun 07, 2012 22:03

After everything that happened over the past few weeks, Zayne asked for and received a discharge from his service in the Phaeda militia. As it turned out, dual recommendations from the Dantooine Jedi Council and Captain Morvis helped push the request through. Calling in those favors wasn't as easy as using Gryph's lawyers in the first place, but it was much less questionable from a legal point of view.

While Zayne was at his parents house, he had to put up with his sisters tuning into the holo of the Coruscant parade celebrating the saving of the Jedi Younglings and capture of a Mandalorian Dreadnought. Morvis received a medal from his Senator mother there, even if he didn't seem as proud of it as Zayne had come to expect. Maybe the guy really did start to change.

The other big news from Coruscant was that Dorjander Kace and his Mandalorian Knights would be getting a very speedy trial, mostly to make an example of him and get him out of the news as quickly as possible. But considering that he was taking every opportunity to give interviews about the evils of the Republic and Jedi, that was probably a false hope.

But all that had taken place over the last couple days. Tonight, it was just a quiet night with the family. No holos, not too many stories about Zayne's adventures, just a good family dinner. Well, until a guest showed up at the door.

Zayne was being a good son and answering the door, cursing his luck once he saw who it was. "Captain Morvis? What are you doing here?"

"I hope I'm not interrupting anything, Carrick," Morvis said.

"We were just about done with dinner, so you're probably saving me from doing dishes. What are you doing here, Captain?" Zayne repeated, stepping outside and closing the door.

"Straight to business, then," Morvis said. "The other day, you said that you picked a side in the war. Do you still choose the Republic?"

"Of course, I do," Zayne said. "But if you want me to reenlist, I won't. I still won't be a party to killing people."

"I won't ask you to," Morvis said. "But I've learned a lot from you this week, Carrick. Not the least of which is that it really is scary how things balance out for you. Well, you balance things out, too. People have never given you enough credit. Not your Jedi Masters, not Admiral Karath, not me, certainly. Nobody ever expects anything from you. But they expect too much from me. My parents, my education... I've always been set up for something I can't do on my own. Not yet."

"But put the two of us together?" Morvis continued. "We stole a Dreadnought and saved a bunch of Jedi. That's a bigger victory than either of us have ever had alone."

"So we balance each other out?" Zayne checked, clearly giving this some thought.

"It's worked out so far. I think it could continue to work," Morvis said. "I talked to my superiors and they've agreed to let me create a special advisory position for you aboard the Reciprocity. You would be a special diplomatic agent on the ship. Not as a Jedi, but as a Lieutenant, part of the military that you'd like to change. I'm offering you a chance to guide us toward a better way of fighting this war."

"You realize that this is probably too much for either of us to handle, right?" Zayne asked. "I wouldn't even know where to start with something like that."

"You already have started," Morvis countered. "My men listened to you. We followed you without question and we won the day without a single casualty on either side. That's your start."

Zayne took a moment to weigh this. After a brief silence, he said, "Well, a wise sage once told me, 'If you don't know how to be someone, you can fake it.' I can do that much until we figure out something bette."

"So you're on board?" Morvis asked.

"Yes, sir," Zayne answered. "But this point is non-negotiable: I need regular time off. I'm a teacher in a... fringe part of the universe. It has nothing to do with the Jedi or the war or anything, but it's very important to me that I keep my commitment there. So I'll be away from Reciprocity for a good amount of time, but I'll be available whenever you need me."

"Every little bit helps, Lieutenant Carrick," Morvis said. "Take the next few days with your family. But we'll need you aboard Reciprocity next week."

"Yes, sir," Zayne said. "I'll see you then."

Of course, just when Zayne figured he would be able to return to Fandom shortly, he got pulled into the military again. But at least this time he was asked nicely and had a choice in the matter....

[OOC: And that's my epilogue for KOTOR - War with some bits partially stolen from #5. Zayne will be back in Fandom in a few weeks, but will probably be largely quiet until then so I don't have to make up stuff on a spaceship.]
