Disclaimer: The Anita Blake universe is created and owned by Laurell K. Hamilton. I just like to play there.

He had a bed. He’d had one for over a year.

Jean-Claude had been unstinting in furnishing Asher’s lavish quarters. A lovely sitting room showed that Jean-Claude remembered his tastes. A well-appointed bathroom with a huge bathtub and its own water heater.

And a beautiful, luxurious bedroom. Spacious and sensual, the room was filled with valuable antiques and exquisite paintings. And a bed. An incredible, enormous, downy bed, covered in a marvelous satin duvet.

The bed called to him, its beauty, warmth and comfort promising respite from the hellish memories of his past and the unsightly inadequacies of his present. But he could not bring himself to lie in that tranquil refuge.

Instead he rested in his coffin.

Most vampires who had secure homes used beds, including Jean-Claude and the others. Often the only vampire in the coffin room, Asher relished the cold, hard reminder of his pain.

Until tonight.

Tonight, Anita had kissed him. Really kissed him. Not to prove a point or to show casual affection, but because at that moment, she wanted to kiss him, only him.

Tonight, after Anita went home, Asher went into his lovely bedroom and climbed into his comfortable bed.

And he smiled.
