I swear, sometimes, I feel like I'm talking to myself.
I've been angry about this since yesterday.
This being, unsurprisingly, the media. Magazines, more specifically. I hate how, when the new year rolls around, during a time that's supposed to be clean slate, new hope and all that, magazines spend all of their time reminding us how not pretty we are. "Here's the latest tips to become a slimmer you!" "latest diet trends (fads)" and, if for some reason the pictures they post of actresses and fitness trainers aren't enough to guilt you into torturing yourself skinny, they also feature products that hide your real shape because of course the shape you are is too ugly to be seen in public.
I'll admit that this is all things I've seen in women's magazines, and that I have not yet looked at their counterparts, but as I recall, they are much the same, except aimed at being more "manly".
Either way, it's disgusting. What ever happened to being a healthy weight? What happened to being attractive as we are, for more than just our body and our looks? Why do so few magazines tout a balanced diet with tips on how to find out what your body specifically needs? We all know that we're each a little different but that isn't reflected in the magazines we read. Why not? Does it really take too much effort to point out that the best dieting tool a woman can have is her own body? (this goes for men, too) When we are eating the right things for us and getting the amount of activity we really need, we feel great. And the side effect of this? We look great, too!
Maybe the truth won't sell many advertising spots, but the truth is really what we need to hear, if we're really going to make the most out of this new year and, indeed, the rest of our lives.
