Here are some websites of not too expensive Hotels in Recklinghausen.

Room is Zimmer, double room - Doppelzimmer. I'd always gor for Standard not Einfach (simple, could be the room has shared bathroom facilites, though it's rare in Germany). Rooms usually include breakfast. The first two look like something I'd try for myself

Well, there is an Autobahn connection Dortmund-Kassel and Kassel-Göttingen, but it looks like a 4-5 hours drive to me. I can ask my father who has a navigation system in his car to check for an approximate drive from Recklinghausen to Göttingen.

Unfortunately, there isn't. Kassel is ugly and the park in the Wilhelmshöhe boring in winter with nothing in bloom and the - rather spectacular - fountains turned off. The Roman fort in Haltern is too far north.

I'd like to visit Cologne and Mainz again, but not in December. For one it's dark so early and bad light for photographing, and second, I hate those Christmas markets you keep stumbling over at that time of the year.

Not in Göttingen. They drag the nuisance out until New Year.
