From Your Mod

Dear Beloved Community:
Rule #8, the one pertaining to dead and mutilated cats, does not apply when it is an image that is in no way realistic looking and clearly a poor photo manipulation. That being said, I sure as hell do not want to receive any messages like the following in the future from any member of this community.

They said:
Hi, sorry to bother you, but the member named ctm1978 made a post that is against the rule number 8. I guess you would have seen it eventually to delete it, but I also wanted to suggest you to get another Mod to help you.

I said:
The one with the head explosion gif? There is no cat being injured in that. It's a scene from Scanners, I believe, and they just stuck a cat's head on it before the explosion. And as for needing more mods, not going to happen. I think I run the community quite well on my own, thx.

They said:
No, not the one with the explosion, the previous post made by "ctm1978" with a death cat and a mutilated body.

I said:
The only posts I'm seeing by him are so clearly Photoshopped - and poorly, at that - that it is blatantly obvious that there are no real cats being injured. Unless there's something I'm missing, which I'm pretty sure I'm not. I went back 120 posts and didn't see anything particularly objectionable. It would be helpful if you, I don't know, sent a link, seeing as how the community averages about 25 posts a day.

They said:
I think we can't add links in the inbox message, but it's a post he or she did last night. The number ID of the post is " 3930899" so you can get to it by editing the link. I know that they're photoschoped, but it's still bloody. I personnaly asked if they could at least be put under an lj-cut but got ignored. I'm not the only one that didn't liked those macros, but I'm sure that some younger members would be shocked by them.

I said:
I'm sorry, I don't see anything wrong with those images. It's unfortunate that you are offended easily but there are no rules broken and I don't find the images in that post to be offensive enough to be worth deleting.

As far as younger members go, it's not my job to censor things for them. That's for their parents to do. Besides, cat macros were born out of places like 4chan. They're *supposed* to be inappropriate. Unfortunately, most people think they're just about cute cats. Personally, I think people should do more research about the communities they're in so that they aren't surprised about what they find in them. Most people don't take the time for that sort of thing but it would save them a lot of grief if they did.

Thank you for taking the time to bring the post to my attention but I don't see the need for any action to be taken on the matter. I'll give you the same advice I give everyone: If you don't like what's on your screen, just scroll down. You won't have to look at it anymore.

They said:
I didn't said that I was offended by it, I just thought it was against your rule #8 and that some of the younger members could be schoked by them, it would have been better if he or she could at least put it under an lj-cut. I work for lj and this post has been signaled as offensive, that's why I contacted you.

I said:
Even if you *do* work for LJ - which is entirely suspect to me considering that you mentioned this nowhere in previous correspondence - I can't force them to put the graphics under a cut. It does not go against Rule #8 as there are no actual dead cats, just poorly Photoshopped ones. They are so poorly Photoshopped that it's blatantly obvious that it's not real.

So unless I receive official rebuke from LiveJournal ordering me to delete the post, I'm not taking any action. I know what my rules specify and the OP did not break any of them. Some people *might* be offended by them but everyone is offended by something and in a community of 8800+ members, it is not easy to keep everyone happy all the time. I think if someone were to read thoroughly all the information on the community info page, they would have a better understanding of what to expect, especially being that the subtitle is "Post some fucking cats!"

Nothing in the community rules stipulates that if something might potentially be offensive to some people in the community, it has to go behind a cut. If some people's delicate sensitivities are offended, I honestly don't care. The internet is a big place and there are far worse things out there than some poorly manipulated photos.

They said:
The staff will not delete the post, but since it's been flagged, it might be put behind a cut with a warning. If you read the comments on the post, many members think it's not allowed and they are listing your own rules.

I said:
If it's flagged, let them flag it. If they're going to put it behind a cut, let them do it. But what this sounds like is just one individual - YOU - being overly butthurt about something that some people might potentially find offensive. Also ONE person saying Rule 8 does not constitute "many members".

I do not appreciate this private little wankfest.

**Will add more as events transpire.**

The moral of the story is this: It is not my job to police the internets and censor or force behind cuts anything and everything that might potentially offend someone. I also believe that it is a parent's job to monitor and control what their children view on the internet, again, making it not my fucking job.

I wrote the rules of the community so I know what violates them and what doesn't. A picture of a cat with fake blood that is clearly Photoshopped does not constitute a dead or mutilated cat.

Also, telling your mod that she's not doing well at her job is not a smart way to get on her good side. She might make an example of you before the entire community. And yes, I hope this turns up in stupid_free. It belongs there.
