Okay, off topic, but I just came across a reference to waxing in "Dress in the court of Henry VIII". In the context in this text the wax was used as part of the conservation process for an extant gown from the late 1400's.
I am not sure of the context in PoF, I looked but could not find reference to it there, but does that make sense based on what you were reading? Or do I have to dig more?

Right now the only example I can find is on Nils Sture's pluderhose, but it is definitely described as being used to prevent fraying. I really thought I read something very recently about evidence of waxing, but can't find it in any of my books. Maybe it was on the Renaissance Tailor.
