“Show me,” he requests.
Merlin demurs, downright refuses when asked again, but this incarnation is just as stubborn as the previous one (and the one before that).
He closes his eyes, not because his new-old friend will fear the gold, but because he cannot bear to see the expression that will doubtlessly follow. Disappointment, horror; it does not really matter as it will all end the same: he will leave and Merlin will be alone again.
A mere five minutes and centuries later he opens his eyes and sees Arthur remains. His king holds him and whispers, “I am sorry.”
