Jeeves' relief in "Fatigue" is absolutely fabulous. It just sprouted up a world of Jeeves & Bertie for me. :D
"Familiar" is sort of heartbreaking in an odd way for me, because Madeline terrifies me, but at the same point, I can see Bertie's point! She's become a fixture of alarmingness in his life, and... there's such a pang of sadness to his wishing he could be her wounded lover. It's quite beautiful, and painful, and alarming because you managed to break my heart with Bertie/Madeline. (Before this I would have said that wasn't even possible, unless Bertie had been forced to walk the aisle with her. ;)
Oh goodness, "Baby" and "Loss"... I just can't. They both kill me. You are so fabulous at heart-wrenching scenes.
OMG, you did a series of coat drabbles!!! ♥ Bertie sneaking illicit coats in! Aw, Bertie's father holding him! (I adore Bertie remembering moments of his parents omg.) And I wondered along with Jeeves if Bertie had dismissed him. *wibble* Thank goodness Jeeves didn't properly destroy the coat and could get it back!
There wasn't much fluff in this set of drabbles was there? I think the fatigue drabble came closet to it. I must admit that I take some pleasure out of writing angsty things...
"Familiar" was an interesting experiment for me. I certainly didn't want to make it too romantic for that would be rather difficult to do without taking Bertie out of character. So instead of sappiness I went for angst.I'm glad you thought it worked well.
And I was hoping you'd like the coat drabbles since you suggested the idea.:) I had to make the ending alright for I think it would even be to angsty for me if Jeeves had destroyed the coat.
Write angst by all means, old thing! ♥ You do it very well, and there's just not nearly enough of it in Jooster. ;)
After "Familiar" I am intrigued how you would pair Bertie with Florence and Honoria now, if you ever would. (Of the set of beazels we meet, I always liked Honoria--along with Marion--better than the rest, I admit.) Oh my, and what if Bertie did in some way love Madeline? My mind is agog! ...and a little alarmed! lol
I adore the coat drabbles! I can quite see the entire scene happening, and I love Bertie angsting over his parents. I also love Jeeves getting to presumptuous with things that are important to Bertie. And when Jeeves, sartorial standards, and Bertie's parents are all put into one sentence you just know chaos is going to ensue. (It's all fun and games until someone loses a priceless heirloom...) I really, really love Jooster fluff, but there's always love for Jooster angst too. (I'm very glad you finished the coat drabbles on a fluffier note though, or my heart would have broken!)
I've always been fond of Tv Honoria. There wasn't anything really wrong with her besides being a bit too rough. It seemed like Bertie and her could even be friends. I think it would be an amusing scene to see her defending Bertie from some danger, whether it be another woman or something else. Book Honoria on the other hand makes quite a firm statement about getting rid of Jeeves so that loses her quite a few points in Bertie's opinion.
I don't think Madeline showed any interest at all in Jeeves so she'd probably let him keep him. Whether Jeeves would stay or not with a married man is another question. I like to think that after becoming friends with Bertie he would, especially if the whole reason Bertie is married is because Jeeves failed to think of a plan in time. It be a bit cruel of Jeeves to biff off when Bertie had trusted him to get him out of the situation.
If Bertie ever did fall in love with a girl (love not just admiring her profile like he seemed to do with Florence) it would most likely be with somebody that Jeeve's could easily manipulate, so I see him staying on as a butler.
I'd think it be harder to write Florence/Berie than most of the others. If Bertie married her he'd just be going around saying "Yes, dear" for the rest of his life. There is of course always the possibility that Bertie likes to be ordered around I suppose. But I don't think he'd like Florence being mean to the servants, which she seems to do.
And... I've just realized I've gone on a rambling spree. Sorry about that.
Well anyway. I'll probably be posting some more drabbles up sometime soon, but right now I'm attempting to write a Gilligan's Island Jeeves and Wooster crossover. Its a bit on the wacky side and a weird crossover so I probably won't post it, but I am planning on finishing it since my sister seems to enjoy it.
Ack! I am so sorry omg! My weeks have been crazy and lost this comment in my email. *facepalm*
Yeah, I really meant TV Honoria as well. She and Bertie seem like they could be great friends if only Bertie wasn't always shaking off an awkward engagement with her! (Once she's married and perhaps past the point of thinking Bertie should marry I bet they'd end up being great friends. After all she's quite a bit like Dahlia in some ways, isn't she?) Book Honoria is less hospitable, which I tend to forget because I haven't read the books in awhile. (I should read them again! lol)
I can't recall, isn't it book canon as well that Jeeves won't work for a married gentleman? I'm pretty sure he won't… So regardless of the fiancés' opinions on whether Jeeves could stay, Bertie would lose him anyway, and I think that influences Bertie's views on marriage as well. After all, who would want to lose Jeeves?
I think it would only really be cruel of Jeeves to leave Bertie stuck in an engagement/marriage if: a) Jeeves said he would get Bertie out of it, and b) if Jeeves got Bertie into the engagement in the first place. But also I read Bertie and Jeeves as a romantic couple as often as I read them as friends, so there are more reasons for Jeeves to protect Bertie. :)
Bertie does seem to "fall" for girls just because of a nice profile. There are very few girls in canon that actually seem even a little appropriate/suitable for him. And Florence/Bertie would not be a suitable match! But it would be fun and rather interesting to see such a romance! And your comment about Bertie liking being bossed around is really interesting because Jeeves rather bosses around Bertie quite a bit. lol
No, rambling is a good thing! Rambling inspires the best conversations! ♥ I am just sorry it took me so long to write back! Also I really want to see a Gilligan's Island/J&W. It sounds like fun!
You know I had never thought about it but Honoria is like Aunt Dahila, just with less blackmailing. That's an interesting point. And I would love to read a story where Bertie and Honoria are just having fun together. After all Bertie shouldn't have to escaping engagements all the time. :)
Yes, Jeeves does make it pretty clear that he doesn't work for married gentleman, and I think that is the main reason Bertie doesn't just give up and choose the least appalling female that wants to marry him. I certainly wouldn't want to lose Jeeves!
Though if Bertie did marry somebody suitable, I can see Jeeves maybe staying. If by this time they were good friends (I really don't think Jeeves became friends with any of his previous employers) and Jeeves wasn't in love with Bertie. Obviously if he was in love with Bertie it would be too painful to continue to serve him after the marriage.
Sometimes I think that one of the reason Jeeves doesn't served married employers is because he doesn't like children. I haven't read all the books yet but so far he doesn't seem to be overly fond of them.
I think it would cute to have Bertie's children calling Jeeves Uncle Jeeves, and Jeeves insisting that its not proper, while all the while Bertie is encouraging them to treat Jeeves as family.
Now that I think of it I don't really want to see Bertie married but I do want to see him with children. Maybe sometime I should write an expanded story based off my baby drabble...
My brain keeps trying to make me write Dark Jeeves... I already sorta assume that Jeeves encouraged Bertie to become dependent on him. Whether to make his job secure or because its just easier for him to help Bertie that way. And now I have a plot idea where is unable to prevent a marriage, and Bertie doesn't tell the girl no because he believes at the last minute Jeeves will save him. Jeeves then leaves a hurt, confused and married Bertie. I am definitely going to ignore that plot bunny. Its too tragic!
I don't believe Bertie knows what real love feels like. Marrying was just the thing to do and he picked Florence because she looked pretty. lol
Well I already have the first chapter finished of the Jeeves and Wooster/Gilligan's Island crossover story. So if you're interested I could have my mom check it (she's my beta reader) and post it.
I think Honoria's a bit too much of a upfront woman to bother with blackmail. She often seems much more concerned about generally telling people how to sort out their lives, not manipulating people into doing things for her. (I'm thinking of Stiffy Bing now. lol) I would so love to read a Bertie-Honoria friendship too! I think that would be quite excellent!
I agree, Bertie keeps fighting to maintain his bachelorhood to keep Jeeves on as his valet, whatever his motivations beyond that point. I wonder what type of woman Jeeves would find suitable, both for Bertie and for staying on with Bertie? Offhand the only beazel that comes to mind is Marion, the singer. (And I entirely agree, Bertie really doesn't know what true love is, marriage really was just the Thing To Do for him.)
I'm actually really intrigued about the idea of Jeeves wanting Bertie to marry, just to carry on the Wooster line, because Jeeves is so proper about some things like that. And I would, in fact, adore a story where Bertie's children call Jeeves "Uncle Jeeves" much to his dismay and Bertie's incorrigible encouragement. However I am in complete agreement that I don't really want Bertie to marry, I just want him to have children. A little angsty pressure from Jeeves for Bertie to marry, intervening angst and arrival of children in some fashion or another, and then the return to fluffy domestic bliss... :D Your drabble could definitely be updated, btw! Adding to fic is always fun! Also I know I've read a story where Jeeves had a daughter that he and Bertie ended up raising together... I think it's by Hazeltea, called "The Complications."
I suspect Jeeves doesn't like children either. There's not a lot of evidence that flat out says he doesn't, but it is hinted at. I always thought Jeeves didn't work for married men because he doesn't want to deal with the wife's power/control over his gentleman, as Jeeves is rather opinionated and controlling himself. *grin* He's frequently possessed of opposing opinions from those women Bertie gets trapped with, for example.
LOL When you say "Dark Jeeves" my brain perks up and demands to know where this may be found. Angst and dark fic totally has a place in the Jooster fandom, what? And now I am so ridiculously tempted to just flail at you and urge you to write it. :D I want to write a Very Dark Jeeves sometime, one who controls Bertie but also manipulates others with ease, etc., but I'm still working up the nerve to try it out.
I very much want to see the Wooster/Gilligan fic whenever you're comfortable showing it off! It sounds great! (Hee! My mom betas for me too actually. :)
Hm... there really isn't too many canon women that would be suitable for Bertie. Marion would be a candidate and perhaps maybe Pauline? Her and Bertie did seem to be good friends, and Bertie wasn't scared of her like he is of Florence and Madeline. His main complaint seemed to be that she liked to get up early in the morning and that she played too much tennis. Though Pauline has Stoker for a father...
If a woman did meet Jeeves' approval she would definitely not be of the commanding bossy, sort. Unless for some reason Jeeves had to leave Bertie. In that case he might choose a woman that was somewhat like himself, so Bertie would be left in capable hands, and would be taken care of.
If Jeeves was going to stay on however I suppose he would approve of a woman that was somewhat like Bertie and who wouldn't challenge his authority over the household. (I agree with you that the main reason that Jeeves doesn't work for married men is that he doesn't want to lose his control over the gentleman)
And the woman would definitely have to have good fashion sense. It would be terrible if Bertie bought an ugly tie and the wife approved of it! Lol
Its strange but the lighter and happier a fandom is the more I wan't to write dark and angsty fics for it. If the fandom already is angsty I'm more prone to write fluff. I suppose I just like to read and write what the canon doesn't give us.
I'll be sure to check out that fic you mentioned. :) And I'll probably post the first chapter of the Gilligan's Island crossover soon.
You're right, there are few suitable canon women. Pauline is an excellent thought though! She and Bertie always did seem to get along, and she's both sweet and smart enough to not expect any real romantic interest from Bertie. I honestly don't know if Bertie could handle Stoker for a father-in-law though. XD
I try to fathom of a woman Jeeves would approve of--either to ensure Bertie's safety because Jeeves must leave, or a woman Jeeves feels he can control/work around--and it's just so darn hard to picture. Certainly no canon woman really fits the bill. (Though for some reason this discussion makes me want to write a crossover with Jeeves and Bertie and the characters from The Mummy. I expect Evie and Rick would be quite and odd introduction for Bertie and Jeeves. Or perhaps Evie would be one of Bertie's past accidental engagements?)
I understand completely the impulse to write dark fic for a predominantly fluffy fandom and vice versa. I'm often drawn to the unusual pairings or themes in fandoms. (I love the Harry Potter fandom as well, for example, the the plots and pairings I love are rare. lol)
I suppose Bertie would actually have to love a girl to put up with a father-in-law like Stoker. Though he did propose to Pauline. That makes me wonder how many girl's Bertie actually does the proposing to instead of the other way around in canon. I know there's Florence (the first time that is) and Pauline, and he was thinking about proposing to Gladwys but never actually did. It seems most of the time the women just declare that they are engaged to Bertie.
Hmm... I've never seen the Mummy, but now you've gotten me interested. Is it any good?
I've posted the first chapter of my Gilligan's Island Crossover. There's not too much crossovering in the first part but there will be soon. :)
