"What is Punk?
Being a punk doesn't mean that you have to listen only to bands that are pre-approved and stamped 'real punk' by a mysterious committee of authorities. It doesn't mean that you have to dress a certain way or act a certain way. Just as there is no all-encompassing definition of what punk is, there are no punk authorities. The very notion of 'rules' in punk is ludicrous. You can't satisfy everyone, and as long as you try, you're going to fail. Be yourself, listen to what you want, believe what you want and above all, keep your mind open. Something you may believe with all of your heart when you're 17 is going to change when you get older. But that doesn't imply that you can't be true to yourself. It means that you're most definitely true to yourself, even when that self-image changes. When you're secure enough to say, "Hey, I heard a pop song on the radio that's really pretty cool" and not worry about the social repercussions, I give you nothing but respect. If you're too scared to say what you like and you succumb to the punk status quo by slagging some band you secretly like, I can't get behind that. That's not punk, that's conformity. It's just a different uniform.
Keep your opinions. Don't be intimidated by loud mouths that are hell bent on tearing you down. Let them carry on, argue if you feel like it, but don't take their shit to heart unless it really, fundamentally changes your mind." -taken from imnotpunk.com
I'm telling you, this explanation fully states what teens (yes i do admit, including myself) stereotype about so called being "punk." I find this guy's whole statement and declaration to be absolutely right. Which is going to lead me into the discussion of being labled. ::rollseyes::
So what if i listen to punk or rock music? So what if i shope at Abercrombie and Fitch? So what if i like The OC? So what if i like name brands? So what if I'm a sucker for Converse All stars? So what if i like Harry Potter? So what if I'm a bookworm? So what if I like school and get straight A's? So what if i like Jazz? So what if i think vintage/retro objects and clothes look badass...SO WHAT? You obviousely can't do anything about it.
I show up one day at school, last year, wearing Converse Chuck Taylors and an Abercrombie and Fitch outfit and two of my so called "friends" asked why I'm trying to go punk rocker. I felt like bashing them on the head for their arrogance. I didn't say anything to them unless i had to. I wouldn't let them ruin my day. They ask me why i lvoe school and read so much when I like rock music...WTF? Arrogant people are the bane of my existance.
Yes i do admit openly and freely that i think Ashlee Simpson is cool. That doesn't give you the right to call me a poser because i listen to her music and i listen to rock. Like the quote said, I found a pop person i actually like. I don't think i should change my opinion to the likes of you or for that matter, anyone.
I have written essay after essay on this subject. If you let me continue the bravado, you'll never heard the end of it. Seriousely lol.
I definitely hope Riot_designs and artificialicons will answer my request to join their community. If they don't I'll keep there button up anyway. Both buttons look nice. =]
