Currently In My Secondary - A-Hole: Clone based on Stone’s Arrogant Bastard Ale

I am not censoring the name of this ale, normally it is spelled out. However this is the first batch that I had to make cuts on. With the price of hops $3.50 - $4 per oz. (v. $1.25/oz in 2007) & malt grains also having gone up 30 cents/lb. over the past year, a lot of my recipes broke the $60 mark per batch.

Whereas I don’t see malt prices going down, I hope we’ll be seeing a reduction of the hop prices once the market recovers from the hop shortage. It was difficult to take a look at all my recipes and cut back on the original gravities and hops. Very painful.

Previously I used 6 oz of hops, in 3 different varieties. Because of this, I cut on variety totally out. The malt profile won’t really be affected by the 1.072 to 1.060 OG cut, since I create my recipes in percentage & specific gravity of the grains. Just won’t have the kick per bottle I want. Overall these cuts saved over $12. A necessary evil, I guess.

Still the previous batches of this were mighty tasted, not an exact Arrogant Bastard clone, but close enough for an enjoyable side by side comparison. Maybe for the Christmas batches I’ll spend the extra $12 & make brew this clone the way it’s meant to be

Just so this post isn’t a complete downer, I am looking forward to seeing what the changes taste like.
