Currently In My Secondary - Hindu Fire IPA Originally uploaded by
casualbrewery Finally it is here, the Hindu Fire IPA, brewed with Saffron.
This one has been in the making for almost 2 years now. Tripletlads introduced me to the conceptwhen he pointed out a friend of his brewed a beer with Saffron. I quickly latched onto the idea, and thought up Hindu Fire IPA recipe. Then last year when brewing season normally kicks in, I purchased some Saffron Threads. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to brew at all in 2008. Fortunately Saffron threads are a dried spice & keep for something like six years.
I am a bit nervous about this one. Never brewed with such a powerful spice before. All in all I have to keep in mind that I did everything right during the brewing process. Including steeping the saffron threads separate from wort. I ended up adding the Saffron “tea” (for a lack of a better word) to the wort at the 30 minute mark.
Though I am a bit disappointed that the color didn’t end up to be fire-orange like I envisioned. It is actually a deep crimson in the secondary. The photo shows the ale darker that it appears to the eye (tried to capture the right colors, but when I took it at that exposure the hops ended up taking on this ugly brown/yellow color). If you look at where the hops meet the beer, you’ll get a clearer idea of the true color of the Hindu Fire IPA.
