Fanfic...for real.
This morning, I wandered into Borders, and saw a new book by one of my favourite authors, Colleen McCullough*. Oh goody, I thought. I snickered a bit when I saw the title: The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet**. Hahaha, surely it was a bad choice to name your main character after an unlikeable Jane Austen character?
Imagine my surprise upon discovering that the character in the book book is Mary Bennet, sister of Elizabeth Bennet, of "Pride and Prejudice"!
I have some book vouchers that I have to use soon, and I think I will end up buying this book, but I have to wonder what it's going to be like, and how it got past the publishers!
*If you haven't read any Colleen McCullough, I reckon you should - there's bound to be something you'll like. Most famous is The Thorn Birds, a dynastic romance/drama. Most impressive, to me at least, is the Masters of Rome series, seven books spanning the end of the Roman republic - each is about 1000 pages long and rich with historical research.
**For once, an advantage from living in Australia: Amazon USA says this book won't be available until December!
