That's a question I never really thought about, but it's intriguing. Even if someone tells you that they are conscious, how do you really know that they are? There are no portals to each other's minds except for language, verbal or non verbal, which I feel is immensely insufficient. In the end, it's a very lonely feeling, lol.

reading this poem i am reminded of that dubliners short story "clay", where the elderly woman is so deluded by the lies she tells herself that she fails to see the tragic circumstances of her life. i know you didn't base your poem on that story, but you really do distill that sense of tragedy that occurs when we shit ourselves (unconsciously?) to get us through whatever, only to end up realizing that it was all shit to begin with. the sense that we are in some ways the the creators of our own moments (delusions, maybe?), and that there isn't this objective, true moment is a bit disorienting ( ... )

If the moment is created by yourself and you know it is meant to be perceived by only yourself, I don't see it as compromising. The moment is wholly yours; if there's only one perspective, then it can be both objective and subjective. I think that we compromise on moments with others because we're afraid of being alone. Human relationships and bonding are defined by shared moments--that recognition, that moment of understanding. If we can't agree on a shared moment, how will we ever develop relationships? It's man's instinct to search for love but man's plight that he may never experience it's true definition. I might have oversimplified things, but that's the only way I can get myself to stop thinking about these sort of tihngs. lol.

Btw, I saw The Class. Remember I said that Rachel Getting Married and The Wrestler were my favourites of the year? Add The Class to that list. It was totally relevant to what I'm going through and what I most likely will go through.

i swear that movie crushed any last sliver of attraction i had towards teaching . not to say it showed the profession in a bad light but it does illustrate that huge gulf that exists between teacher and student. i guess that ideal of guiding young minds was effectively killed in the film as most of the time it was teacher vs student, oppossing forces pushing up against one another, where no progess was achieved at all. more than any other movie i was watched in the whole teaching genre, this might have been the most scariest as it actually shows the enormous weight a person in position of guidance has to carry. good luck, haha.
