wednesday was our first prescribed burn of the season. i wasn't sure i'd even be on the crew, but i ended up being one of the four igniters for our site. after a few minutes of slight awkwardness, i became pretty comfortable with the process. it felt strangely natural and was very exciting, to have such a powerful force nearby, and to have just sparked it into being... but it was also meditative, as i was alone under a helmet with hot wind blowing wildly around me. i felt wild. i probably could have been a bit more restrained with my methods, because i ended up with a sooty face and nostrils and a very exhausted body. but it wouldn't've been as fun. and to glance over my shoulder while dripping fire on the ground, to see tall flames and bits of charred vegetation whipping up into the clear sky, waves of heat washing over me as the line of fire crackled across the landscape... was so invigorating an experience. my heart quickens to think of it again!
and i've got a bunch of pictures to share... the first one is of me loving fire, and the rest are... tobermory, art hop, and miscellaneous photos from months past.
aNd, i started to play in a 'band' with mike and zach. it started with the idea of being a drone band
(one of our influences...), which i guess it still mostly is, but sometimes we play krautrock-type songs or african rhythms or just whatever-distortion. whatever instrument i play, i just play the same thing over and over for a really long time. it's fun! we've had one show so far, and we'll probably try to set up a couple more at people's houses, and we might record sometime.
a lot of those pictures were taken by mike, ben, greg, angela, gahlord, emily, db
