general update about life

hello on a sunday! ... ...

it is an extra-warm october day, and sunny and speckly, very nice. i woke up and thought that i wanted cornmeal pancakes, so mike and i decided to make a little brunch. i've never been so into big brunch meals, even though i have lived with several people who love them. i don't really drink coffee much, and i don't really like pancakes or eggs or potatoes that much. but i do love drinking orange juice and eating toast! but anyway, i have discovered that brunch is a much nicer thing when a sunday can be a real sunday, and i don't have to go a university campus afterwards... so we invited zach over, and i made cornmeal pancakes that were all right, and mike made eggs and bacon and coffee, and we had a little arugula salad. mike and zach left half way through the pancake-grilling to record bells at the church across the street. then we talked about wolves and dance music and potlucks and schemes for getting home items to come to ann arbor to play a show...

so i've been working at my new job for two weeks and i really like it. i actually get to use my academic knowledge, and i feel like people value my experience. i feel lucky to have this. lately, in the middle of visiting various natural areas and talking to park stewards, i've been working on a brochure for Bird Hills Nature Area and adding some stuff to a brochure called "Your Landscape and Our Natural Areas." Checking the plant lists for accuracy and adding some stuff about why it's awesome to landscape with native plants. Something a bit like this, but even better! i'm also going to write some stuff about cool plants, birds, butterflies, frogs, etc to look for by season in each park. i like that my perspective is much broader with this job, and i am re-learning a lot about general aspects of natural history, rather than focussing only on one small portion of it, as in grad school. i continue to question the philosophy and methodology behind ecological restoration, however. but i don't see this as a negative thing at all.

otherwise, hee hee... i've been listening to some music lately that makes me chuckle. i got a cid symphony and ant trip ceremony from the psych folk community, and i imagine someone born in twenty years who will find some nest material recording around 2047, and share it with their friends. mike said maybe they'll try to figure out if 'sir charles russell pussycat' is a real person or not. funny.

the michigan theater is having an almodovar festival; i guess a lot of his films have recently been re-printed, and they look real nice, and it's just fun to see them on the big screen anyway. last night i saw 'law of desire'. it was good!

tonight i might go see 'matador'.

and now i might read some non-fiction, or just sit around.
