Chapter 1- Season of the Witch
"It just doesn't make any sense," Castle said as they got out of her car. "What doesn't make sense?" Beckett asked as they made their way towards the local sheriff and his deputy. "She took out the heart of the first victim, then she takes all 10 fingers off our 2nd victim, and then she takes the tongue of our third victim," Castle observed "Her trophies are random at best and Dr. Frankenstein at worst."
"Yea well Castle, serial killers are usually not all there and what seems random to us makes perfect sense to them," Beckett replied.
"Just...my gut tells me that something isn't right," Castle said but Beckett only rolled her eyes, she didn't have time to worry
about his gut, she had a killer lose in the woods that she needed to catch.
"Sheriff Clive," she said, holding out her hand for the man to shake. "Detective Beckett I assume, and you must be Mr. Castle," the sheriff said as he shook their hands. "Well a witness saw a woman matching the description of your killer abandon her car here an hour ago before walking into the woods, we've got dogs and here's a
map of the area and a couple flashlights," Sheriff Clive explained as he handed over the map and flashlights.
"So hows about we go find this crazy bitch before it gets dark," the Sheriff said with a grin. "Sounds like a good plan," Beckett replied with a strained smile.
The dogs were on the trail within seconds of being released, their
barking filled the cool early Autumn air as they began their hunt. They dove into the forest without looking back as the sun began to set, the harsh glow caught the yellow and orange leaves left on the trees and Castle couldn't help but feel as if the forest was burning down around them. They followed the dogs deep into the woods, their barking and baying loud enough for anyone hiding in the woods to hear long before they stumbled upon them.
Castle looked over at Beckett and could see the frustration on her face through the glow of all the flashlights. He was about to make a joke to help lighten the mood and hopefully put a smile on her face when they came to an abrupt stop and the barking of dogs on the hunt turned into mournful howls of dogs that had lost the trail. "God damn dogs, ya'll ain't worth the kibble we feed you mangy mutts," one of the deputies cursed but the dogs only continued to howl.
"Alright looks like we have to split up, Pratt and Mitchum you two go East, Lee and Cushing you go West, me and Officer Frye will go South East and our friends from the NYPD can continue on North," the Sheriff said as he looked down at his map. "Think you can get trough the woods without getting lost detective?" Sheriff Donovan asked.
"We'll be fine Sheriff, thank you for your concern," Beckett replied cooly. The Sheriff only nodded his head " Alright then lets meet back here in an hour and then we'll call it a night."
"Why would she abandon her car to run for the woods, she had to know that we would find the car and follow her," Castle mused as they walked. "Well maybe she didn't count on us finding her so fast, if it hadn't been for that witness who saw her picture on the news we wouldn't have found her here," she replied.
"But still there must have been some reason for her to come specifically here, she must have a cabin out here or a cave or something, she looked creepy enough to live in a cave," Castle said and Beckett couldn't help but smile. "So I think we should have some shamefully hot hotel sex when we get out of the creepy serial killer woods," he said and she elbowed him in the ribs. "Ow what was that for?" he asked with a pout. "We're out here trying to find a killer, Castle would it kill you to focus for a minute?" she asked. "Sorry," he said dejected.
Beckett rolled her eyes and shook her head as she turned to face him "Fine we can have hotel sex if it will make you happy," she said but as she looked at him he didn't look happy he looked frightened. She heard a raspy laugh behind her, it was low and menacing and it made her skin crawl.
Beckett followed Castle's gaze and saw her illuminated in the glow of their flashlights. Annabeth Steele stood before them she was naked from the waist up her pale skin was covered in dirt and dried blood, her long black hair hung down and covered her large breasts. She wore only a skirt made of stitched together animal fur with a belt of human bones, her feet were caked in mud and her gnarled hands were covered in fresh blood. She looked old and young, ugly and beautiful all at the same time.
Her eyes were what disturbed Beckett the most, her left eye was ice blue while her right was yellow like a cats. There was no remorse in Annabeth Steele's eyes only malice, hatred, and evil. "NYPD, freeze Annabeth," Beckett said as she drew her weapon and pointed it at the woman. Annabeth only laughed as she reached out to them with bloody hands and the flashlights Beckett and Castle were carrying both went out.
"Shit, shit," Castle cursed as he beat on his flashlight, frantically trying to get it to turn back on. Beckett stayed as still as possible, listening for any clues as to where the crazed woman was hiding. She couldn't help but jump as she heard bells start in the distance and she realized that they must be close to a church. As the bells began to ring their flashlights flickered back to life. Castle looked around frantically but Annabeth had disappeared into the darkness.
"Beckett, what the hell was that?" he asked and she could hear the panic in his voice. "I...I don't know Castle," she replied, unsure of where to go next. "You wanna know what that was, that's exactly how I pictured the Blair witch looking like, actually you know what, that was actually scarier than what I pictured," Castle babbled out as he looked around them.
"Castle, calm down she isn't a witch, she's just a mentally deranged woman in the woods," Beckett tried to reassure him and a small part of herself as well. "Isn't that the same thing?" he asked. They heard the laughter again and they moved back to back scanning as much as they could see with the flashlights. "Ok that is classic witch cackle," Castle whispered. "Shut up," she hissed as she looked for a clue as to where Annabeth Steele had gone.
"Oh you pretty filthy creatures, you've entered where demons dwell," her voice was as rough as sandpaper and Beckett shivered as the very sound seemed to send a chill straight to her bones. The wind howled through the dead trees and she caught the sight of something through the gnarled tree trunks. Blue and Yellow eyes staring through the dark like a predator watching its prey.
"Castle she's there!" Beckett called out before bolting after the woman. She could hear Castle close behind her, the crunch of dead leaves and broken limbs under their boots and the cackling of Annabeth Steele ringing loudly in the dark woods. Beckett could see her darting through the trees with ease, her pale white skin like a flame in the dark. "Beckett we need to call back up," Castle called to her. "No time, she'll disappear again," Beckett called back.
They were gaining on her, she was only 10 feet away, they just had to push a little harder and they would have her, and then she and Castle could go back to their hotel room and...Beckett and Castle burst through the clearing and stopped dead in their tracks.
"Where is she?" Beckett asked herself, her finger on the trigger of her gun, she was ready for an ambush.
"How could she disappear like that we were right behind her, she didn't have time to hide," Castle said a he walked further into the clearing. The clearing was still and bathed in the light of the full moon that had come out from behind the clouds. Castle jumped as they heard the howling of a pack of wolves off in the distance. "Calm down Rick, they sound like they're a couple miles away they won't bother us," she tried to reassure him.
"Kate I think we should go back, I don't like this at all and I'm sure the others are wondering where we are by now," he tried to reason with her. "I can't just leave, she's around here somewhere and if we leave now we may never get another chance to catch her," Beckett replied in annoyance.
"Ugh, Kate I think you need to look at this," Castle said as he got closer to the middle of the clearing. Beckett walked up beside him and looked down to see a large pentagram scorched into the earth, in the middle of the star sat a heart, ten fingers, and a tongue. "What the hell is this?" she whispered.
"She led us here, this is a..." Castle was cut short as a large black animal slammed into him, knocking him to the ground. He gasped as he tried to swallow as much air as he could, his hands grasping in the dirt as he tried to find a hold to push himself back to his feet. "Castle!" he heard Kate yelled but his ears were still ringing and she sounded like she was miles away. He heard eight pops and a howl of pain, "Kate," he called out but his words were slurring, whatever had hit him felt like a MAC truck covered in fur and it was hard to tell which way was up or down.
Castle screamed in agony as what felt like a hundred knives covered in acid slid into his left calf. "Castle!" he heard Beckett scream, she sounded scared and that scared him. He looked behind him to see the biggest wolf he had ever seen with his leg locked in its enormous jaws. He looked back at Kate who was trying frantically to get another clip into her gun. The wolf began to drag him away from her and Castle knew that as soon as it was done with him that it would hunt her as well. "Kate run!" he yelled before the wolf gave a powerful pull and they disappeared into the darkness. "Rick!" she screamed before taking off after them, she had to save him.
She ran as fast as she could get her legs to go, following his screams as best should could. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she ran through the trees, tripping on roots and smashing into the bare limbs of dead trees, it was as if the woods themselves were trying to hold her back. "Rick!" she yelled, she could hear his anguished screams all around her and she tried to make herself run even faster. Kate skidded to halt as his screams abruptly stopped, the woods were quiet and still. "Rick!" she screamed in desperation as tears began to fall down her face. "Rick!' she screamed so loud her voice cracked. The woods were silent and still, except for the laughter of Annabeth Steele that was carried on the wind.
