Castle walked into the department ready for a case. It had been days since the last case ended and he was ready for some action. Besides if he had to watch all of them sit around doing paperwork again he would snap. Unfortunately, he didn't get his wish. As he rounded the corner there sat Beckett and Esposito with a stack of folders in front of them.

“Please tell me this is a joke and you are hiding a dead body under the table,” said Castle as he sat down. Beckett laughed and shook her head.

“Sorry Castle. Everyday can't be Christmas for you,” she said opening another folder. He just looked at her with a smirk.

“You know I don't need a dead body for it to feel like Christmas. I like unwrapping things and you look like you have just way too much on for-” but he didn't get to finish before Beckett knocked her coffee cup onto his lap. Castle jumped about a foot off the floor before realizing that the cup was empty. He turned and looked at Beckett who was smiling as she filled out her papers.

“Some things are better left in their wrappers. You just don't get to take them out to play with. You admire them from a far,” she said under her breath and just loud enough for Castle to hear.

He sat back and thought to himself. If he could just unwrap Kate, he would show her that he wanted to do more than just play with her. He knew he was in for a long and dry day so he picked up a couple of cases and looked at them as Esposito and Beckett went onto the next stack. He smiled to himself as he recognized a few of the cases that he had worked on. He loved being here and working cases. He was going to be sad when the book was done. Maybe they would hire him on as a consultant, he thought as he put the files back down. Now that would be cool.
He turned to talk to Esposito about it when he finally noticed Ryan was absent from the group.

“Where's the other musketeer today?”

Esposito looked up from his paperwork. “He called me this morning and said he'd be in later.”

Kate stopped and looked up. “It's so unusual for him not to be here. I don't think he has been late for work since I started.”

“If you ask me, I think it's the new skirt he's seeing. He has hardly wanted to do anything since she came around,” said Esposito as he grabbed another case.

Castle looked at Beckett and then back to Esposito. “Oh, I think he has wanted to do something. Just not with you my friend.”

They all laughed for a minute before Castle spoke.

“So, has anyone seen little miss fashion nightmare yet?”

Esposito laughed and shook his head. “Good one Castle. No I haven't met her yet. Must not be a real catch since he hasn't paraded her around the station yet.”

“Well if the tie he wore yesterday is any indication of what she is like then maybe we don't want to see her,” said Castle slapping hands with Esposito. Beckett looked up and rolled her eyes. She still didn't understand how men could be so shallow sometimes.

Castle saw her roll her eyes and went to say something when something caught his eye. A very petite brunette had walked into the room. She was wearing a silver and blue flowered sun dress with matching heels. Even though she was very petite she seemed to have curves in all the right places and legs that seemed to go all the way up. Her skin looked smooth and flawless except for a small faint scar on her left shoulder. She looked out of place standing in the room. She looked like she would be better off at a charity event or maybe out shopping at Sax's. Castle noticed that Esposito was checking her out too. Then to their surprise they noticed Ryan coming up behind her wearing a tie that matched her dress.

“I guess little miss fashion nightmare isn't that much of a nightmare herself,” said Beckett not even looking up at the other two. She had seen a picture of her from Ryan and knew she was a looker. She knew the boys would be staring at her the moment she walked in. It still bothered her though. She really did hate how men judged people by outer beauty before inner beauty but then again some women did too.

Ryan stepped around his beautiful girl and grabbed her hand as they walked over to the table.
“Guys I would like you to meet Samantha Spencer. Samantha, this Detective Kate Beckett,” he said nervously.

Kate reached out for Samantha's hand. “It's nice to meet you.”

Samantha smiled back to Beckett and shook her hand. “You too, I've heard a lot about you from Kevy.”

“Kevy?” said Esposito trying to hide his laughter. He wasn't the only one. Castle was smiling from ear to ear.

Beckett gave the guys a dirty look as she turned to see Ryan's expression. He looked mortified by the nickname. Samantha must have also noticed Ryan's expression because she quickly turned and gave him a tiny kiss on the cheek. Castle stared at her for a second before taking a step towards her but Esposito bumped him gently out of the way.

“Miss Spencer, it is a pleasure to meet you,” said Esposito kissing her hand. Samantha blushed slightly and turned away. Beckett gave Esposito one of her famous disapproving looks as Ryan stepped closer to Samantha. He didn't like how chummy his best friend was getting with his girl.

Beckett cringed when Castle stepped forward to introduce himself. She figured he would say something they all would regret but she was surprised when he didn't.

“Spencer? Are you related to Harry and Jewel Spencer?” said Castle as he shook Samantha's hand.

“Yes, I'm their daughter,” she said as the blush on her cheeks returned.

“I knew your dad. He was a good man. Played poker with him once or twice.”

Beckett looked back and forth between Castle and Samantha trying to figure out where she had heard the name Spencer before.

“Harry and Jewel Spencer are famous horse racing jockeys. Harry is in the hall of fame for jockeys. Won the Kentucky Derby more times than anyone else. He died in a boating accident about 5 years ago. Jewel Spencer is the first woman jockey to win a major horse race. She actually won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes this year and is trying to be the first woman ever to win the Triple Crown next week at the Belmont Stakes,” said Ryan who was leaning over to whisper the information to Beckett.

Beckett nodded her head to Ryan as he slowly moved away. That explained why Samantha seemed to be a little bit higher class and why Castle would know her family. Beckett wondered where Ryan had met her. She would have to wait to ask though.

“Well I hate to run but I am meeting Samantha's mom this afternoon for an early dinner,” said Ryan entwining his fingers in Samantha's.

“It was nice to meet you all. I'm sure I will see you all again soon,” she said giving Ryan's arm a squeeze. Ryan turned to leave with Samantha by his side. Esposito shook his head. He still couldn't figure out how a girl like that wound up with someone like his friend Ryan. He was happy for him but damn, she was fine.

“Have fun you two. Samantha it was nice meeting you. Take care of Kevy for us,” shouted Castle after them. Ryan turned around and gave Castle a nasty look which only made Castle laugh harder.

“How old are you?” said Beckett with her hands on her hips. Castle leaned across the desk looking at her.

“I'm more like a teenager or at least my mind is like one. Maybe that's why I am imagining you-”

“Enough Castle,” said Beckett who headed towards the break room. She needed a drink and coffee would just have to do right now. Besides she didn't want to Castle to see the blush across her cheeks.

The day seemed to drag after Ryan and Samantha left even though Castle did have fun playfully teasing Beckett every chance he got. The day slowly turned into night and Castle headed to an empty home. Alexis was out with friends for the night and as for Martha his mother, God only knows where and with who she was tonight. It didn't bother Castle though. It gave him an opportunity to work on his Nikki Heat book. He needed to get it to the publisher soon so tonight seemed like a great night to finish it. As he sat down and read the last chapter he had written his thoughts automatically went to Kate. Nikki was so much like her. He sat back and smiled as he thought about her and began to type.

The knock at the door startled him. He looked at the clock. It was 11 PM. ‘Alexis must be home,’ he thought as he walked to the door but when he opened it he was surprised to see Beckett standing there.

“Detective Beckett, what a surprise. Did you come over to see me because you missed me?” he said looking at her with a smirk. She didn't smile back though. In fact she looked upset.

“Grab your coat Castle. Someone was found hung in their apartment about an hour ago,” she said running her hand through her hair.

Castle smiled and grabbed his coat from the closet and ran out the door to follow her. “I knew it. I knew we would get a murder sooner or later. They can run but they can't hide from us.”

Kate didn't say anything. Castle could tell she was troubled. “Kate, what's wrong?”

Beckett swallowed hard before turning to Castle. “Try to be on your best behavior Castle. This case hit close to home. Mrs. Jewel Spencer is who was found hung in her apartment.”

Castle did a double take at Beckett as the doors of the elevator opened. “Ryan's girlfriend's mother?”

“The very same and according to the officers there Samantha and Ryan are pretty shook up.”
