Cate Winchester is a golden-haired tomboy with strong eyebrows, long legs, and lean muscles, and anyone who knows her will tell you she is hard as nails. Cate is a pilot, trained and toughened in the Army, and now the proprietress of a one-woman charter business, Winchester Air. A tattoo of folded black wings adorns her back from shoulder to hip, a gift from her beloved uncles on the day she earned her pilot’s license. (Uncle Cas had used his nifty angel powers to ink her; Uncle Dean had supplied her with copious amounts of whiskey to dull the pain.) The tooth of a dragon, slain by her father, hangs from a leather cord around her neck. Cate is twenty-six, and the second of Samuel Winchester’s three daughters.
Clara Winchester is Sam’s firstborn, two years older than Cate, and she shares her father’s lush brown locks and powerful intellect. As a child, she spent her spare time poring over Grandpa Bobby’s old books on theology, mythology, and history. Now she is an archaeology professor at a small, private university in New Mexico. Like her younger sister, Clara has a tattoo from her uncles. Hers is a sword -- the Sword of Truth -- inked into the length of her spine four years ago last May, when she finished her Ph.D. at the University of Texas.
Clara and Cate were raised by Hunters in post-apocalyptic Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Their father, Sam Winchester, and his older brother, Dean, are living legends in the hunting world. They’re Winchesters, THE Winchesters, the ones who cast Lucifer into the Pit and brought the world back from the edge of the abyss in 2010, the same year that Dean’s angelic partner, Castiel, finally succeeded in his mission to find God (although Cas still doesn’t like to talk about the experience). Clara will always consider Dean and Cas one of the greatest love stories of all time, especially since her mom had been instrumental in getting them together.
Rhea Morgan Winchester, the girls’ mother, is a Welsh Seer who was recruited by Castiel thirty years ago to help in the search for his Father. It had taken Rhea less than an instant to recognize what was blooming between the Angel and the Hunter, and she had wasted no time in pointing it out to them. In the wake of the apocalypse, Rhea found herself falling for the younger Winchester brother, just as Castiel had fallen for the elder. A year after the the world didn’t end, Sam and Rhea were married. Clara was born the next year, followed by Cate in 2014. Ten years after Cate, the Winchesters welcomed a surprise in the form of Cassidy, the youngest Winchester. Now, at sixteen, Cassidy seems to have inherited her mother’s gift of Sight.
Our story begins after dinner on December 26, 2040, in the living room of the sprawling old junkyard house that had become the center of the mammoth Winchester Compound in Sioux Falls. On this night, Dean and Sam have called everyone together for a family meeting...
