Coooooooooooool. I really love how they hid Whale's identity for so long (and the name thing was clever, Whale as in James Whale, director of the 1931 Frankenstein movie, had to look that one up). Considering all the literature characters we're getting (Mad Hatter, Hook, Dr Frankenstein), it's harder to predict who will be who when it's not just fairy tales that are fair game. Anything Disney's ever had their hands on plus anything fantasy-related that's in the public domain could show up.
One of the things I like most about this show is how the weave all the different stories together. How else would we get the Hatter, Rumpelstiltsken, the Evil Queen, and Dr Frankenstein in the same story? Then throw in a similar version in our world and add Prince Charming and Jiminy Cricket to the mix. I mean, really. Love it.
I really felt for Regina this week and was surprised when she "destroyed" Daniel instead of just ripping the heart out and trying again somehow (makes me wonder whose heart that was and if that was the reason he was such a monster, or if it was never going to work at all, or that the unbearable pain was the price of resurrection). Now that she doesn't have that goal that has driven her for so long (she can't have given up completely or she wouldn't have kept his body and brought Whale to Storybrooke), it'll be interesting to see where they take her character.
One minor quibble: I know they were trying to have that parallel b/w Regina and her mother, but the "so many I couldn't keep track" bit about the hearts is a little inconsistent considering last season she went straight for Graham's heart when she needed it. What's the point of taking hearts to control people if you can't remember which is which?
Also, not smart of Charming to just dump Henry in a stable with the barest of instructions (muck out stall, brush horse, bond) and not actually show him how to do any of those things or tell him that horses can be dangerous. At least find someone who works there to help him out? Sheesh.
Back in PresentDay!FairytaleWorld, Cora still bores me but the adventures of Snow, Emma, Mulan, and Aurora continue to be awesome. Love love love that Emma didn't fall for Hook's ploy, not for a second. He's growing on me, so I'm looking forward to next week and seeing how the Jack and the Beanstalk story plays out (looks like if nothing else, we'll continue to see a lot of Lost actors on this show).
