Massive vid rec post.
Time for another vid rec post, as there have been some brilliant ones lately. Some of these I've already posted as insta-recs, but I've included them again in case you've missed them, b/c they're just that good.
Movin' Right Along by Wolfpup (Farscape) - Because of course John is Kermit and D'Argo is Fozzie. I have no words for the utter joy this vid brings me by combining my favorite childhood muppets with the muppets in space. Some favorite moments: the head bowing on "share the load", the rock/paper/scissors bits, all the insane dancing, Kermit saying "hey, this song is sounding better, Fozzie" to the clip of John and D'Argo striding down the hallway then the clip speeds up and it's just perfect, the equally perfect moment where Kermit tells Fozzie "you take it, you know best", and the hysterical bit where Fozzie asks "Hey, storm is right; should it be snowing?" then Kermit replies "No, I don't think so" while John shakes his head. That killed me. I'm not afraid to admit that the ending makes me cry. The high five was the perfect way to end it.
Holding Out For a Hero by Mary Crawford (Hercules: the Legendary Journeys) - Fresh some Escapade2006, a Widow Twanky vid. No, seriously. An absolutely brilliant and fearless use of the most overvidded song ever. I LOVE this version. Jennifer Saunders, yay! Sometimes I forget just how cracktastic this show was; this vid totally reminded me. Hercules will always hold a special place in my heart as my first "real" fandom. My gateway drug, if you will. Vids for H:tLJ have always been sparse, so having a vidder such as Mary is the proverbial oasis in the desert. Awesome stuff.
Alien for Christmas by Barkley (Stargate SG-1) - Love the song anyway, but set to Jack/Thor? Brilliant. nostalgia_lj, this one's for you.
Heart of a Man by Killa (Deadwood) - I'm not familiar with the pairing (nor the show apart from vids, to be honest), but the quietness of this vid compared to other, more violent vids is a nice contrast. I'm certainly intrigued by the complicated relationships presented.
Come to Jesus by Gwyn and Jo (Deadwood) - The most graphic Deadwood I've seen yet, and I find having it set to a religious song very meaningful. The song is absolutely gorgeous and I play this one often.
Swing Down Chariot by Eunice (Dogma) - Another insta-rec, but I can't rec it enough. It's just so much fun. Wonderful use of movement and beats, and it really does 'swing'.
Icebound Stream by sisabet (Due South) - Another vid I can't possibly rec enough times. The OMGWTFPOLARBEAR! vid. This one may be the most technically intricate vid I've ever seen. It's mesmerizing. So much symbolism and metaphor here, not to mention the movement, and there are polar bears. Best representation of the painful dance that was Victoria's Secret ever. I notice something new every time I watch it.
Book of Days by Birgit (Farscape) - Yet another gorgeous FS vid from Birgit. I think I kind of space out when I watch this one, zoning on all the visuals, then the ending jerks me back to reality and I get a bit teary-eyed. *sniff*
Ecstatic Drum Trip by Luminosity (Farscape) - It's a Luminosity vid. What, you want more than that? Honestly, Farscape was a visual experience unto itself, but this speeds it up even more and is a marvel to watch.
Do You Dream of Me? by Mary Crawford (Hercules: the Legendary Journeys) - H:tLJ vid!!!! *squees self to death* Mary's second, and the fandom is so much richer for it. Creepy, atmospheric vid focused around the Dahak arc and Iolaus's death and possession. Great use of timing and movement on all the heavy guitar chords. The beginning is very strong and grips you immediately - my favorite bit is right at the start where Gilgamesh gestures to the words "come down, carefully". Just lovely motion.
Thief by fabella (Invisible Man) - IMan may be a comparatively small fandom, but it has some of the best vids around. Nice angst and h/c here, with some touches of slash.
Welcome Home by kanzeyori (permetaform) (Stargate: Atlantis) - Because Atlantis = Home. I still have the cassette tape of the album with this song, and it's always been a favorite, so to see it vidded to 'lantis makes me very happy.
Kid Fears by shalott (Star Wars) - An older vid, but she's remastered it and made some changes. More use of footage from the prequels. Still has the same absolutely brilliant timing.
Hopeless by Luminosity and Suze (LOTR) - Gollum and The Ring. Both hysterical and creepy.
Maid on the Shore by Commodorified (POTC) - One of the only POTC vids that focuses on Elizabeth. Great song choice here - I love Stan Rogers' music, and it goes really well with the source. Totally not what you'd expect, just like Elizabeth herself.
Best Care Anywhere by adraefan (MASH) - One of very few MASH vids I've ever seen, but this one may be my favorite. My love for 80s music immediately makes me like the song choice (by Yes), and the vidder chooses some clips with great movement for the bits of the song with wordless vocals. Both cheerful and tragic, much like the show itself. Everyone gets some attention, but I love the focus on BJ and Charles, especially.
Mixed Nuts by Laura Shapiro (Farscape) - The best description I can give for this vid is that it's one big celebration of Farscape. The breakdown of the music into themes for the show is just brilliant. I always come away from this one with the biggest grin on my face. Gorgeous use of movement as usual.
Proud by dualbunny (BSG) - At first listen, you don't think this song is from a genre that would lend itself well to a show like BSG, but it so works. Sort of a search for the humanity of the human cast, both personal and professional.
Cartoon Heroes by Mamoru (Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis) - People seem either to love or hate this one, depending on how much they separate cast and characters, b/c the vid uses footage both from the show and from behind-the-scenes Lowdown clips. To me, it really captures the spirit of both series, how tongue-in-cheek they are and how much fun.
A Time of Her Own by Gwyneth (Sharpe) - A VividCon2005 premiere, focusing on a female recurring character in the Sharpe movies. Very nicely done.
Circles by Laura Shapiro (West Wing) - If anyone could take The West Wing and make it visually dynamic, it's Laura Shapiro, and she pulled it off brilliantly. Of course, she had me right off the bat with the song choice, a lovely instrumental duet with strings. Clip choices perfectly match the emotion of the music.
Are You Gonna Be My Girl? by Jen (Farscape) - Another from VividCon2005. An energetic, 'shippy dance, all John/Aeryn.
Copacabana by Destina and Barkley (SG-1) - So.damn.funny. Very odd, unique look at SG-1 and the goa'uld, complete with crazy triangle with Daniel/Sha're(Amaunet)/Apophis. I'm not sure if the "story" makes me laugh the hardest or if it's the dancing Jaffa. Ok, so it's probably the dancing Jaffa.
Disappearing Man by Melina and Jo (LOTR) - These girls should just keep on making LOTR vids to Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer songs. Really. It's like the music was written for it. This one focuses on the complexities of relationships with Eowyn, Aragorn and Arwen. I had the best reaction the first time I saw it and it got to 3:05, with this moment in the music you just don't expect and it's beautiful and just right and then it happens again at the end and I'm all "omg, yay Eowyn!".
Exile by Wolfling (Dr Who) - I play this one a lot, too, b/c I love Kate Rusby songs and this one is no exception. I've not seen much of Nine yet, but I could still connect with what the vid is saying here. And, for the Doctor, there really is no going home.
VVC2005 Intro Vid by tzikeh - The intro for the 2005 VividCon was special b/c of the 30th anniversary of vidding. I laughed my ass off, and tzikeh singing is a thing of beauty. Really. *g*
Jerusalem by Seah and Margie (BSG 2003) - Mostly a look at the main three women of the series - Starbuck, Roslin and Boomer. Once again the use of religious overtones reels me in hook, line and sinker.
Crush Story by Sandy and Rache (The Tick) - Cutest. Vid. Ever. Seriously the happiest vid in the world. There is The Tick. There is Arthur. There is cake and the celebration of anniversaries.
The Moth by pipsqueak (Gone With the Wind) - I adore this vidlet so much. The song is perfect and I'm very impressed with the way she edited it - when I downloaded the full version of The Moth I was amazed at how smooth the cuts were. My favorite visual is Rhett and Scarlet bowing to each other at the ball to "ready or not". It just fits with that lilt in the music.
After Rain by Gwyneth (Band of Brothers) - A vid for which it feels I've been waiting forever. Visually stunning; I love her use of the stop motion stills that mirrors the credits from the miniseries itself. Slashy if you want it to be, but above all a marvelous illustration of the friendship between Winters and Nixon. Another Escapade2006 vid.
These Two Arms by Killa (Xena:WP) - Also from Escapade2006 and probably the most beautiful Xena vid I've seen, certainly the most heart-rending. Good use of clips from all the seasons and although I'm still not pleased by how it all ended, this vid makes me feel better about it all.
My Candy Man by yuna_firerose (House, MD) - Very catchy, amusing vid. I usually dislike the use of sound clips in a vid, but here it mostly works, though I think the ending is a bit weak. I do like the repeating visuals of the spinning cane and the quick cuts to "oh, my love" in the chorus. Nicely slashy and a good look at Wilson's myriad ties throughout the season ;)
Boys Keep Swinging by Jill, Kathy and Kay (SG1) - I've recced it before after last year's VividCon, but now that it's available online I'm reccing again. Best Daniel vid ever. You'll need to ask for the password, but don't let that stop you.
Walking on the Ground by Seah and Margie (Multi) - Just, wow. So meta. Such a history of vidding. Watch it, then read the explanation and how it was made, then watch it again. Seriously awesome. This vid is a freakin' masterpiece.
Not Dead Yet/I'm All Alone by daasgrrl (House, MD) - House to a song from Spamalot, you ask? Let me reassure you - it's awesome. Segues from a marvelous chorus of not-dead-yet patients to hysterically cheesy House/Wilson "duet", and just wait until the choir kicks in.
Meet Me in the Dark by Diana Williams (Brokeback Mountain) - Haven't seen the movie yet, but I've read the story so I downloaded this vid anyway. It's enough to break your heart.
Barcelona by Laura Shapiro (BSG 2003) - Oh, Boomer. Stunning, stunning vid. Very nice interpretation of lyrics, especially the clip chosen for "I am bleeding" and those for "the meaning of mercy". I'm so incredibly envious of everyone who went to Escapade this year.
You by Barkley (Homicide: Life on the Streets) - I only know vague details about the source, mostly what cimmerianwillow has told me, but I was able to follow this vid pretty well. Enough to hurt for Bayliss and Pembleton. Ouch.
New Frontier by here's luck (Firefly) - It's here's luck. Just watch.
Running Down a Dream by Eunice (SGA) - Eunice made me like Sheppard. If only for a few minutes. In my book that's a damn fine accomplishment.
Jesus Walks by mimesere (Angel) - Wow. Just, wow. Don't let the song put you off, b/c this shouldn't be missed.
Back in Black by smutcutter (Star Wars) - Bwahaha!
Rumble by Shalott and Speranza (SGA) - This should not work and yet it does. Scientists vs soldiers, yo.
A Place in Time by dualbunny (Dr Who) - Very nice look at the 9th and 10th doctors.
More Human Than Human by Luminosity (BSG 2003) - Great Cylon vid from sockpuppett. The ending just kills me.
Steal My Sunshine by pipsqueak (Finding Nemo) - Another vidlet, and this one will kill you with the cute. She's done some fantastic things with a flashback effect and the cuts are quick and bouncy just like the song. This one gets a big "Awwwwww!" from me :)
Woman King by Wolfpup (Deadwood) - Again, not familiar with the source but vids like this make me want to be. Lovely.
A Day in the Life by Shalott and Speranza (Dead Zone) - A Dead Zone vid! God, this is intense and gorgeous and I adore it.
And of course, cimmerianwillow's Lawrence of Arabia vid. Here's a temporary YSI file. Let me know if it runs out. This is not to be missed.
Whew. That took forever. And I should seriously be working on other things, but this has been a WIP for too long and it feels good to get it posted finally. Enjoy.
