I had to return a present today. Luckily my Mom and I worked out a "Get something you want if you don't like what I got you" deal years ago after a particuarly awful sweater. Unfortunately I had what I always think confirmed: I hate shopping. Its a dislike that grew out of my youth when my shortness etc coincided to make clothes difficult to fit. (Side note: the average American woman is 5'4. Why do jeans not reflect this?) Add to that a narrow heal that meant I literally walked out of shoes, and well, I rarely had success. I was actually looking at jewelry, but the manikins and people and overpriced headbands/scarves/wallets and well, I was done. I never did understand how people love shopping.
However, I am grateful that I was given such lovely Christmas presents, including the new book by Doris Kearns Goodwin Team of Rivals. Lincoln never gets old and assuming she's gotten over her little plagiarism thing I should be facsinating. It discusses his cabinet and how he construct it from his...rivals. That would definitely do away with yes-men. There isn't enough consideration of the opposite opinion as valid today. Washington too used a wide array of advisor, some of whom were enemies (Hamilton and Jefferson repeatedly clashed.) We fight and remain firm in our beliefs.
The real question is, who will be the next political figure built up by the biography machine? The founding fathers are perennial favorites, as is Lincoln, however, I'd place money on William Jennings Byran. He's a little recent, but his name has panache and the face of Populism would make sense after the recent election ushered in so many Democrats hailed as populist.
