Baby Jem and I slipped away from the family yesterday to go watch some awesome roller derby goodness with some girlfriends. So many things to love about this movie, I hardly know where to start.

1. It's a sports movie. (I have a mad craze for sports movies)

2. It's a sports movie ABOUT WOMEN.

The names. THE NAMES! A couple of months ago I was reading a list of rollerderby names, and they are a corker. Anna Phalaxis, anyone? Wisha Porno Star? Mae Q Cry? Made of win!

I also loved how all the women who got hurt were expected to suck it up and keep going. Awesome.

YES! It's just so contrary to how women are supposed to act/behave. It was lovely.

I like that you have the in-depth feminist reading to sell it to the girls, and then finish off with a shot of a girl with her arse hanging out of her skirt, to sell it to the guys.

I forgot to say - yay for the treatment of minorities and disabilities! Not that it's part of the story at all, but it's nice to see deaf chicks and POC where their 'difference' (wrong word, but can't think of a better one) isn't used as shorthand for their character.

Yes, I liked that there was a quite casual diversity in the cast when there didn't have to be - it's always good to see that.

Heh I did kind of love that one of the black girls in the derby called herself Rosa Sparks, though...
