I have a fascination with AI. In the real world, there's Deep Blue and Watson. Then, there are the fictional constructs such as Sonny from "I, Robot." HAL 9000. Colossus. Roy Batty. Proteus. Ash and Bishop. Data. T-800/T-1000/T-X. David. Wall-E and Eve. You know, the battery-powered, silicon-chipped, titanium endoskeleton cybernetic organisms who could pass the Türing test with flying colors. And even more fascinating are the AI robots who are physically indistinguishable from we flesh-and-blood types.
Which is why my excitement level went off the charts when I spotted this summary for
sandymg's J2BB AU fic,
jRobot:
When Jared meets an incredibly handsome green-eyed stranger in a bar he thinks it’s his lucky night. But Jensen has a secret. He’s not exactly human. And oddly that’s not even the biggest problem as very real bullets start ricocheting past them. Jared makes a split second decision that will forever change his world. Can Jared keep his new friend alive long enough to unravel the mystery of who made this incredible machine? Who wants it back? And is it really a good idea to let his best friend Chad bond with it?
Because everything Jared thought he understood about life, love and humanity is about to spiral out of control...
My first thought: "Yay, AI!" Second thought: "Yay, robot!Jensen!" Third thought: "Chad Michael Murray, WTF?" ;) Still, the premise was intriguing enough that I took a peek at the first chapter to see if it was worth my time.
Seven chapters and waaaay past my bedtime later . . .
Wow. "jRobot" is brilliant and awesome and moving and just . . . wow. I fell in love with robot!Jensen, the plot itself is very nicely done, and the ending would make Ray Bradbury or Philip K. Dick proud. The author throws a few curve balls along the way so things surprisingly don't come together the way you might expect from the events of the first chapter, but the way things do come together is purely glorious. A surprising bad guy makes an appearance, and the aforementioned Chad Michael Murray makes for an unexpectedly sympathetic good guy. Plus an ending that had me in tears. Also -- nerd alert! -- what with this being an AI fic and all, the author also explores the philosophical and ethical questions that arise with the creation of any artificial intelligence. Terrific work all around.
This fic is all sorts of beautiful. And I really, really hope
sandymg decides to write a sequel.
Please, go read it!
