Artist Notes: The lovely and fantabulous quickreaver bid on me for the Typhoon Haiyan Fandomaid . . . and, at long last, here we go.
The piece illustrates a key scene from her future!curtainfic story Prayer Bundles. (If you have not read this beautiful tale, get to it, ASAP.) The first time I experienced this story, the end scene with Doc's ashes hit so hard, it brought tears. I've re-read the fic several times since then, and that scene gets me every single time. It's a quiet brotherly moment, with touches of angst, hope and love as Dean tries his best to soothe Sam's emotional pain, a pitch-perfect scene in which quickreaver nails all the right notes.
So when she requested an illustration of a scene from one of her fics, I knew immediately which one.
Cris, thank you for creating such a wonderful, moving snapshot of Winchester life, post-hunt. I only hope I was able to do your prose justice. :)

When Sammy opened the lid, the breeze scooped up the mountainside, right on cue. He tilted the canister and fine, gray dust was lifted into the air, carried up and away, out across the basin as the prayer bundles fluttered.
Dean watched his little brother until there was no more ash to spread and Sam quietly put the lid back on the tin. They listened to the wind, to the sound of a hawk’s call in the distance and the rustle of branches and the occasional ping from the car.
[Stuff and nonsense.]
This is, I think, the eighth or ninth draft version -- the boys did not want to cooperate and Sam's windblown hair is the ONLY thing that remained from the initial sketch.

. . . you know I had to give Q an extra bit of Sammy-skin. ;)
