I found this novel by Kawabata to be a more satisfying set of vignettes than Thousand Cranes. It was a book I enjoyed and I felt a connection to its foundling heroine with exquisite taste in subtle kimono. I'm glad in the Fall I helped my students with special needs study the art of Klee and Chagall as the works of these artists featured in the novel. I'm also glad of all the research I've done on geisha as I understood the references to the Inoue and Hanayagi schools of dance and the Kamishichiken geisha and the River Kamo. Now I've moved on to Kawabata's Master of Go.
