[ recs ] game of thrones/asoiaf
Okay, so by no means is this supposed to be an all-encompassing rec list. Rather, I've decided to just rec a few fics at a time and eventually compile a larger list. As you can see, this particular installment is rather heavily Lannister-biased because well, tbh that's just representative of what I mostly read, but I'll try and rec some other-character/pairing-based fics soon too.
Game of Thrones / ASOIAF Reccs
I've broken the reccs down into three categories: Westeros for those set in the canon world of either TV- or book-verse, Modern AU for fics set in a modern alternative universe such as our world, and RPF for well, RPF (Real Person Fic) about the cast of Game of Thrones. I've also tried to warn for any book spoilers so hopefully you'll be able to appropriately avoid if you wish to.
WESTEROS
AND ALL WILL TREMBLE BEFORE US by magisterequitum l Robb/Dany l 2,200 words ; NC-17
Summary: There is another treaty that is an option. One of a long forgotten princess across the seas.
SPOILERS (somewhat vague, if I remember correctly) for Dany's storyline in SoS. Splits off from Robb's storyline. A beautiful look at how things could have gone differently, and a great way to bring Dany to Westeros, and explore people's reactions to her as well.
LITTLE LION MAN by themirrorofsin l Jaime, Tyrion, Cersei, Tywin l 1,100 words ; K
Summary: Jaime was golden, the strong cub worthy to take his father's place when the time came. That was all anybody told ever him.
This is a really neat look at the Lannister family dynamics, from the eyes of Jaime as a child. The author depicts the various relationships very true-to-canon and with some interesting insight as well and it makes for a great read. Who doesn't love reading about the Lannisters as kids?
REMEMBER SPRING SWAPS SNOW FOR LEAVES by sing_song_sung l Cersei, Jaime/Cersei l 500 words ; R
Ficlet centered around Cersei that begins with her relationship with Jaime as kids and then delves into her as Queen, exploring some of her parallels with Sansa as well. The author captures Cersei and Jaime so in-character as children and deals with Cersei's gradual loss of innocence so well by then mirroring it back at her.
TEAR THE FLESH by midnightblack07 l Jaime/Cersei l 600 words ; T
Summary: “She saw it still--the fresh cut--in the flicker of his eyes, in the twitch of his jaw, and the injustice of it all hit her harder than it had for a very long time…”
This is a really great take on Jaime's reaction to Cersei having Robert's child (TV!verse) and the strains in their relationship, and deals also with Cersei's conflicted emotions and the tragedy of her son's death, and is really just an aching, wonderful read.
THE JOINERY by

Summary: Ned Stark takes the Iron Throne, and with it, a Lannister for a wife.
This is a fic based on the idea of Ned taking the Iron Thron after Robert's Rebellion instead of Robert. The idea explained early on is that the start is different but the end cannot be changed, and it's absolutely fascinating. Ned and Cersei are both so true to character, and the writing is absolutely beautiful and pulls you in. The story is well-paced and intense and is a great portrayal of stark realism of the world it's situated in.
MODERN AU
MY POOR HAUNTED SOLDIER MAN by the_stark_words l Jaime/Cersei l 8,000 words ; R
Honestly, I would recomend anything by this author, which I why I am reccing so much of them, because it's all so damn good and beautifully written. This AU takes place with Jaime as a soldier returning from war in Vietnam to his girlfriend, Cersei, and deals with the effects of war and the strains in their relationship. Includes Osmund and Jon as well.
SPLITS IN THE SKIN by the_stark_words l Ned/Cersei w/ Ned/Catelyn and Robert/Cersei l 9,300 words ; R
Okay, so I adore Modern AUs and this author is my favourite for them in the Asoiaf fandom, that I've come across. This fic deals with Ned, in a relationship with Catelyn, meeting his friend Robert's new girlfriend, Cersei, and growing to realize that there is something very wrong about their relationship. His inability to turn a blind eye and the relationship that forms between him and Cersei has severe consequences, emotional and otherwise, and it's a magnificent read.
THE ABYSS WILL GAZE BACK INTO YOU by the_stark_words l Jaime/Cersei, Petyr, Sansa l16,000 words ; NC-17
THIS FIC IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE FICS I'VE EVER READ. I am one hundred percent serious, you will be bowled away. It centers around Jaime, Cersei, Petyr, and Sansa, and is a thrilling, intense story of police-officer!Jaime trying to track down a killer who's been murdering prostitutes. The characterizations of everyone in such a clearly different environment is absolutely flawless and the story itself is a gripping mystery and just so well-written, like, I don't even know what else to say, just GO READ IT. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY.
THE WILLING by
magisterequitum l Robb/Dany l 2,200 words ; PG-13
Summary: When the Lords tell him that he must marry, it's his fifth cousin that is chosen.
A Modern Royalty AU, with Robb as a prince and Dany a rather enigmatic girl he meets at a bar. The author portrays Dany and Robb, as well as some minor characters, very well and they feel vibrant and true-to-character even in such a different setting. Dany is bold and wonderful and Robb is careful and intrigued and it's just a delightful read.
RPF
LOVE IN FIFTEEN ACTS by honey_wheeler l Richard/Emilia l 10,100 words ; NC-17
This is actually the only RPF I've ever read for Game of Thrones, but my god, it is the loveliest thing ever. Very sweet and well-written and funny account of co-stars falling in love. More people should write Richard/Emilia. Seriously. But for now, just go read this fic, because it is all kinds of adorable and awesome and I'm basically just gushing to myself thinking about it. MAJOR SPOILERS FOR STORM OF SWORDS IN SECTION 12.
