Let's stop with victim blaming/rationalization/mansplaining

Sep 03, 2014 11:40

I posted this on FB the other and it took all of two minutes for a dude to come in and mansplain and derail. And then delete his comments when he was challenged. At least he demonstrated my point?

*******

If I see one more dude mansplain that Jennifer Lawrence should not have taken the photos of herself because, dude, "nothing's private" and we should not "expect" privacy, and she was just stupid, etc., and it was all her fault, I think I am going to scream. They are essentially saying, hey, it's totes OK that some creepers hacked into her accounts, stole her photos, and then posted them on the web because, you know, nothing's private, man. If it had been her credit card information there would be far fewer defenders of the people who did it. But since it is nude photos it is all her fault. Such utter bullshit. Slut-shaming and rape culture all rolled up into one tidy package. The presumption that women are public property is so insidious that we have it EXPLAINED TO US on the regular how it is our fault when someone violates us, because, apparently, everyone owns us.

CAN WE STOP WITH THE VICTIM BLAMING???!!!

For real. Can we just stop. Let's put the focus on the scumbags who thought this was OK/fun/amusing to do. Stop defending it and trying to explain it away. Let's start by saying, "Hey, that is a really shitty and gross thing to do that cannot/should not be defended."

Let's start by not talking about what Jennifer Lawrence did or did not do and start talking about why people think it is OK to steal photos of people and post them on the web without permission. And let's take a long hard look at why so many people are so damn invested in blaming Lawrence for what has happened.
