work is really really really really boring today. speaking of boring,
for those not in the know, i'm a big tornado/civil defense siren fan. i like to look at them, listen to them, and learn about them. anyhoo, there aren't any sirens down in these here parts, least they're few and far between. back home, you see them all over the place...the colony alone has 4. well i was driving down mopac and i had to exit 35th street (for the life of me i can't remember why i was going that way...) and when i looped back around the highway to go east on 35th, i saw out the corner of my eye a federal signal thunderbolt. !! yay!! it's like the ONLY siren in austin to my knowledge. naturally, it's located conveniently next to camp mabry....i should have driven by there a LOOOOONG time ago! duh! anyway, it's a t-bolt 1000, as it does not have solinoids which allow it to make the really cool fire wail...but it will do. i got out and looked at it the other day. you can BARELY make out the civil defense insignia on the control box and the name, "thunderbolt". the blower box's signature yellow paint has almost completely chipped off and the pipe is rusted. it looks pretty sweet. there's a wire running from the nearby telephone pole to the siren, so looks like it's still wired and presumably functional. i bet those military boys test it, i just gotta find out when.
