Today in the newspaper I read an article about a track star from Bend who killed himself.
He was 24.
The article made me so fucking angry. I hate reading obituaries and articles about people who kill themselves because the people who write them get everything all wrong. I think it's irresponsible and almost disrespectful for those articles to be written about how excellent the person was, or what great things they did with their lives.
Somebody doesn't kill themselves because everything is fantastic. They kill themselves because they're hopeless and incessently sad and there isn't any other way for them to escape their pain. It's a statement of absolute finality. The story about the guy in the paper shouldn't have been a story of athletic success. It should have been a story of wasted potential and emotional instability. It should have been a story about understanding and death and the way he felt, not about the way some people saw him and all the amazing things he did.
