Well hello faithful friends. I have now attended all of my classes for this Fall 2006 semester - the initial semester of my sophomore year of college at Appalachian State University.
Do you want to know what I am taking?
These are my classes, followed by a short synopsis of each:
*Portraiture and Identity: An IDS Tangent taught by an art professor, Una Pett. UNA. We are going to draw portraits, and learn the history and philosophy behind them.
*Cultural Anthropology: An introductory level anthropology class, taught by a cynical, ultra-liberal, and slightly androgenous woman named Sharon Rorbakken.
*Fibers One: A begining fibers class in the art department, in which we make paper, dye fabric and combine multiple fiberous media to create artwork that is both aesthetically pleasing and FUNCTIONAL. Jeana (pronounced Gina) Klein, a fabulously stylish young woman, guides the class. This is the only class that counts toward my major.
*Savannah, Georgia: A Pete Reichle original traveling class. The class only lasts until October because we spend a good portion of our class hours IN Savannah. Time before the trip will be spent meticulously reading about the history and culture of Savannah, as well as memorizing the names of all the Squares.
*Edible Schoolyard: I lied - I have not been to all my classes yet. I forgot to go to Edible Schoolyard last week and I will profusely apologize to Billy Schweig, a good friend of mine who facilitates the class. I did take the class last semester too, but this year is sure to have more in store, considering that the Schoolyard is actually up and running, beaming with herbs, vegetables, and eight-foot sunflowers.
Also, I have a job as soon as I bring two forms of identification to a lady named Carol. I, Cassandra Liuzzo, will be a nude model for the drawing classes in the art department. I have never had a job where I had to fill out forms and submit my funds to the government. Filling out the official paperwork today left me a little confused.
I am living in the LLC again and because I have not fully organized my belongings, I do not like to spend much time there. However, by not spending time there, I am not organizing my things, and I have entered a vicious cycle of disarray very early in the semester. Also, I forgot how cold air conditioning is and I really hate it.
Things with Doug have been much better since this weekend because we spent time in Tennessee with friends and music and tents. It was nice to be away from the stress of Boone at this time in the year. Both of us were heavily affected by it last week. We have talked things over and are trying to work with our schedules and the situation we have been given.
I have learned that in order for a relationship to work, the participants must be willing to adapt habits and mold themselves to and around obstacles. Doug and I will not be able to spend as much time together this semester. He has promised to avoid making promises he will not be able to keep. I have promised not to drop everything I am doing just because he has a bit of free time. We have to work together and give each other constant feedback, especially because we can't see each other often. At the same time, it is fruitless to talk about our relationship whenever we do see each other because eventually we would have nothing to talk about anymore. So our motto from day one has been "go with the flow" and that is what we must continue to do to make this work. I don't think anyone in the history of the world has claimed relationships are easy.
On another note, I have become increasingly resistant to being idle. It is great for getting work done, but I find myself running on caffine and little sleep. However, I balance my activities by chosing tasks that require different amounts of energy and picking one that best suits my mood and the time and place. I feel extremely productive and that is gratifying.
