If we plotted Obama and McCain on a chart relative to my supposed "ideal" candidate, they would very likely be so close as to merge. Let's look briefly as the issues you mentioned.
Economics: They both support a central bank, they both support taxes, they both support massive government intervention in the economy. (I wish not to argue the merits of such positions, but from my perspective, they merely offer two sides of the same coin.)
Foreign policy: They both think it's okay to send our military forces around the world. The fact that they have different pet interventionist projects is of no major concern.
I do think Obama is probably saner, but with a Democratic house and senate, he'll likely be able to do more damage (from my perspective). In the end, it's like arguing about the difference between dark meat and white meat chicken when what you want is a bowl of ice cream.
