I was watching TV yesterday when I saw the ad for the new KFC menu item. I forgot the name, but it's bits of chicken wrapped up in something like pita bread and there's vegetables and tacos inside. It immediately made me think of and crave for Mexican food. Why can't we have a decent Mexican place near the place that we work? It's just so sad. Then for some reason, I remembered the burrito that Char and I loved to get at the canteen fronting Miguel Hall when we were still studying at DLSU. It was so good and it was HUGE. It was hard finishing one burrito, but we managed, because it was that delicious. It would hurt to not finish it. Of course after that, it became a trip down food memory lane. I remembered the treats in and around our campuses that we enjoyed as students.
Guys, what foody treats from your school days do you miss and wish to eat again?
For me, here's a list:
1. Tattle and Treats' Chicken Fillet. The Ultimate. Most everybody in my group of friends in St. Scho miss this particular dish. It's chicken fillet doused in gravy, white sauce, or both and you have an option of topping it all off with cheese. Of course, there's always a huge cup of hot rice on the side. Back then when I was still in High School, I could eat about two of these and still have room for dinner. See why I was so fat back then? XD; This was one of the main culprits. I had this again last year and I could barely finish one whole serving of the stuff. XD; I should have just tried the student meal. It's got a smaller serving.
2. Pumpernickle's Super Burger. It's not that large, certainly not like a Champ or a Big Mac, but it was very filling. Imagine, a burger patty, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, and fried egg between two pieces of bread. Of course for some it might just be a snack, but for me back then in St. Scho it was lunch. I miss this. I hadn't had this since I was in Grade School.
3. Pupung. We hung out in the little restaurant after school every Friday. The food was cheap and nice enough. I miss their boneless bangus, my default order. I think we went there not really for the food, but just the place. It was another place to hang out after a stressful day at school. We were all very sad when it closed down.
4. Indonesian Fried Rice. Or was it called something else? Char, help me remember here. Anyway, it was spicy and very, very savory with scrambled egg on top. It could also be bought in that place beside Jollibee. It's also gone now, replaced by a laundromat and a salon.
5. Quickly. Taro Ice. Nuff said. I miss it so much. Taro Ice made me like having tapioca in my shakes.
6. Agno Food. Siomai. Shawarma. Ice Cream. Fish/Squidball. Pancit Canton. You want it cheap? Agno is where you'll get it. Of course, you never know if the stuff's clean, but I guess that's part of its charm. I practically survived on Agno food during our thesis editing days. There's just something very soothing about hot pancit canton with egg and siomai with lots of chili garlic on the side. Maybe it's the fact that I could eat that much and not spend more than 50 pesos.
7. Burritos from the Canteen in front of Miguel Hall. This always satisfied my craving for Mexican food. I think I have already rhapsodized about this on my first paragraph. Now I want some. Booo.
8. RAP's Garlic Chicken and Chicken Lollipop. I think RAP's secret to success is their unique yellow sauce. You can eat it alone with rice or with their best-selling Chicken Lollipop. For me though, I go to RAP for their Garlic Chicken. It brings back memories of a rainy day during thesis crunch time and I got stuck in RAP with a bad mood and a huge bowl of Garlic Chicken. I felt way better after finishing the bowl, even if it was still raining torrents outside. XD;
9. Munch Alley's Sisig. Sisig! It's because of Munch Alley's sisig that I grew to love the fatty native dish. Munch Alley's servings were enough for two when it came to sisig. Well, at least it was when Char and I ordered the single order. Oo, si Char ang lagi kong kasama nun kumain.XD;
10. LS Canteen's Food. I love the snacks from the LS Canteen. There's a lot to choose from, but I gravitated to the mojos and the French toast. You can never go wrong with both. However, if you're in search of something more robust, you can opt climb the side stairs and order Japanese or walk a bit further inside past the glass doors in the back and you'll find pasta. I think it was only in my 3rd year in La Salle when I was able to sample the pasta in the back. It was good, but nothing beats TOSH or others outside campus. XD;
Ah, now I've gone and made myself hungry. XD; This is what happens when one is undergoing PMS...
