In Mariupol right now there is really a slight panic, and probably it is actually even excessive.

Today, on August 25, Mariupol was engulfed by a wave of panic. People hastily depart from the port city, into which not only many of Donetsk residents temporarily moved, but also employees of Donetsk Regional State Administration along with the Governor Sergei Taruta.

Rumors of the DPR squads taking over the city tomorrow spread among the residents. Those who do not support the "Republicans" are really panicking.
"At first we wanted to leave to Dnepropetrovsk, but they say that the city is already overcrowded with refugees, you can't rent housing even for money. The whole family will go somewhere in the center of the country, where - we still do not know. The transport stations today are simply overcrowded by people with trunks: everyone says that tomorrow the DPR will be in the city"- Valery from Donetsk told "Vesti".
"At the railway station in Mariupol the lines are rather long - people take tickets to Lvov and Kiev (and in principle there are tickets), as well as for the trains from Berdyansk. And our central department store today first opened and then closed. And a few shops in the central Lenin Avenue closed today - they are afraid of something, probably, "- said a resident of Mariupol Gregory on his Facebook page.
Earlier, in the leadership of the DPR itself, its "prime minister" Alexander Zakharchenko announced that control over Mariupol will be re-established in the near future.
It was safe in the city at the time of publication of the material, but the battalion "Dnieper" announced that there was ongoing military action in the nearby village of Markino.
There are only a few volunteers
"The settlement is guarded by the fighters from the battalions "Dnieper-1 "and "Donbass". The DPR forces pulled towards this settlement from the north" - the message said.
In addition, according to the detachment, military vehicles also entered there from the side of Russia - about 30 tanks. The forces of the battalion destroyed 5-6 tanks.
In more detail, Semenchenko said that there is no large-scale fighting under Mariupol
"There's firing on residential housing in Markino. Residents sit in basements. There's also ongoing shelling of residential buildings in the city of Novoazovsk. As for Mariupol - the territory from Novoazovsk to Mariupol is fully protected. But a mechanized breakthrough is possible. In addition, the battalion has information that on attack on the city by the Crimean group from the side of the sea is possible, "- representatives of the" Dnieper" report.
According to them, they were joined by volunteers from among the residents of Mariupol. However, this is not a mass phenomenon - the majority of those who disagree with the DPR simply leave town, as they did in their time in Donetsk, Gorlovka and other cities in the region.
There's no calm under Novoazovsk too. According to the data from the Council for National Security and Defense, in the morning there was an attempt of the Russian military under the guise of the DPR fighters of establishing a new area of armed conflict in the south of the Donetsk region.
"At 5:20 am, in the area of the settlements Sherbak and Novoazovsk a mixed armored convoy of 10 tanks, two IFVs, and two "Urals" violated the state border of Ukraine. Border guards entered combat and called for reinforcements, "- said during a briefing in Kiev the representative of the Council for National Security and Defense.
The advance of the main part of enemy vehicles was stopped by fire on the line of Sherbak - Markino. Currently, the roadway Novoazovsk-Mariupol is under the control of the ATO forces. From the territory of the Russian Federation there is shelling in the direction of Novoazovsk, the Council for National Security and Defense says. The Kremlin, in turn, they said that the Russian materiel didn't invade Ukraine and didn't fire at it. Read more ...
The press service of the Donetsk Regional State Administration reported that there are enough forces in the city for the defense against a possible assault, as it was clarified, Governor Sergei Taruta didn't leave the city, and is performing his duties.

A little more of kosher panic right here http://korrespondent.net/ukraine/politics/3409993-batalon-azov-soobschaet-o-nastuplenyy-separatystov-pod-novoazovskom (in Russian)

Fighting under Novoazovsk, cutting the roadway Novoazovsk-Mariupol, fighting under Sedovo, all this caused a hysterical reaction and triggered the flight of the active junta supporters to Dnepropetrovsk.
Furthermore, the junta here, considering the punitive battalion "Azov", which escaped from under Ilovaysk, may have up to 800-900 armed people, and it is most likely that they seriously outnumber the militia squads operating on the approaches to Mariupol and Novoazovsk.
But the suddenness of the emerging threat on the background of low morale of the junta units in this sector of the front lines, generate a strongest panic in the media and among the local population, which spreads rumors about the imminent surrender of Mariupol and about new strikes of the DPR. In this regard, the panic on the one hand may remain simply an episodic panic and lead to no more serious consequences if the local forces of the junta will not start to scatter not in the face of the real but rather in the face of a fictional threat of the assault on Mariupol.
Nevertheless, the actual posing of the question itself that Mariupol can be surrendered to the DPR, says very clearly about how much the events in Donbass have changed in the recent days.

This breakthrough in Mariupol may have political underpinnings in addition to the military ones. If an agreement with Akhmetov was reached, then control over Mariupol will mean that the new unrecognized state will also include major and untouched by the war industries and Akhmetov himself will make certain efforts to restore the ruined DPR.
The swiftness of this operation may have to do with the fact that the variant of stopping the war after the negotiations cannot be ruled out, so the faster success could be achieved in this area, the more advantageous will be the positions of Russia in the determination of the borders and the more advantageous will be the cards possessed by Akhmetov. It is worth remembering that Akhmetov already surrendered Mariupol to the junta and if they really managed to negotiate with him, then he has his own levers, pulling which which may result in the surrender of the city to the DPR. In general, this is only a possibility, but it can not be excluded, in the light of the ongoing contacts between Moscow and Akhmetov's people.

And a special update on break through Uspenka south to the Sea of Azov. It certainly looks risky because the flank along the border is subject to strikes from the west and it is fairly easy to cut it by a blow of mechanized units. And in other circumstances it would have looked like a blatant gamble similar to pushing 3 brigades of the junta into the first southern cauldron. But because the junta doesn't have reserves here yet, and because transferring them from under Perekop will take time (and in this case they are also needed to fight for Amvrosiyevka), the militia here are on the offensive in the operational vacuum (the enemy is just not there), which brings them to the outskirts of Novoazovsk and on the approaches to Mariupol. From this actually comes the panic of the junta commanders and the residents of Mariupol - a serious operational crisis unfolds before them, to which they ended up completely unprepared. Time and, most importantly, reserves are required for its localization. The militia here has several days of clearly won time, which they can try to convert into captured cities, trophies, and military and political successes.

At the same time, it is not worth underestimating the junta, it does have certain forces here for the defense of Mariupol and if the junta decides to defend the city, then taking it won't be very easy as it may seem to someone in the wake of recent successes. Naturally despite being delighted with our success, it is not worth indulging in excessive euphoria, the enemy is not routed yet and its panic right now is not a sign of its final defeat but rather a sign of its bewilderment and confusion from what's happening.

PS. We got on a phone with our source in Mariupol - indeed, there is panic in the city, people depart from the city, there are lines at the pumps.

UPD:
During the retreat, the Naziguard created traffic http://lifenews.ru/news/138960 (in Russian) at the exit from Mariupol.

Joke of the Day.
The residents of Mariupol have no reasons to panic"- said Taruta (Governor Donetsk region) while taking his seat in a helicopter.
As it is reported (to be confirmed) that the evacuation of the administration of Gauleiter Taruta is ongoing - they are taken either to Dnepropetrovsk or to Zaporozhye.
UPD:
From the comments.

The Ukrainian army is active in Mariupol, it is impossible to drive up to gas stations - there are kilometer lines everywhere, accomplices of the Kiev regime want to refuel before running from Mariupol to Zaporozhye. Right now I was driving home from work in my village of Sartana, at the exit of the city, by the end of the village Volontyorovka, there is a checkpoint with the Ukrainian army, today it was reinforced with three portable "Grad" vehicles and one AA-gun on wheels. The anti-aircraft gun is turned on the city and for shooting at the road. Two "Grad" vehicles are directed towards the Sartan on the direction to Novoazovsk, one of them faces at the city. This checkpoint was dug in a former landfill - deep pits, the name of the site is "Plotina" (n.b. "Dam"). There are water treatment facilities there. Ukrainian soldiers are dressed in their uniforms: in flak jackets and helmets at the checkpoint there are at least 8-10 people. around the roadblocks there are impenetrable jungles of trees, there was an APC in the shadow of one of them.
Everywhere they are trumpeting that Russia invaded and that it advances on Mariupol with its tanks.
The "Dnieper" battalion wanders about the downtown on technicals, fuel trucks and military Kamazes are on the move.

It is also reported that since the morning the trucks filled with armed men leave the city and go in the direction Mangush and Zaporozhye region, eyewitnesses note. According to military experts of the DNR, this may be due to the successes of the militia in the southern sector of the front.

UPD:
"We are preparing to fight back with tank grenades from WW II. Mariupol before the assault. The top brass have a hangover after yesterday's parade, they are not up for the war.
No materiel, no leadership and no information. Only our battalion commander and the desire to keep the city is with us", - stated Lavrentiyev.
