so clean clean

It takes the death of Beverly Sills to bring me out of hermitude. I am terribly, terribly sad at her passing--I have a vague and completely uncalled-for proprietary feeling about her, because I almost used her as my topic for the sophomore year Revolutionary Resurrection project (of course, she wasn't dead then, so it was more possession than resurrection) and so read everything ever written about her--but as the lone up note (NYUK NYUK), NPR and the Times had up her recordings on their respective websites.

Other good news? Silk skirts, new galoshes, and postcards from Florence. The galoshes are a very big deal because I had a year and a half long love affair with my old galoshes, which were tall (up to my knees) and bright red but unfortunately not well made, as they broke this spring. The new galoshes, which are standing at attention and making my whole room smell like fancy rubber, are also tall and bright red, but they won't break and basically I'm super excited about something banal as rainy day footwear someone please give me something else to focus on full stop.

My project for the week has been stripping and refinishing my mammoth antique desk. The thing is probably a hundred years old. It is eight feet tall. I am still slightly shocked at my audacity, but by now all the old banged-up finish has been stripped and sanded off and so it sits in my garage, smelling pungently of sawdust and waiting for me to stain it and put it back together. That's for tomorrow, I think.
