The Hardest Decision of My Life

Mar 25, 2006 15:08

I’ve been in turmoil over a decision as of late. I sit weighing the pros and cons of this very concept each and every day yet very rarely make headway. It’s one of those things that once I follow through with, there really is no turning back. It would mean giving up something that has been a part of me for a majority of my life, for something else equally as important. Yet, there is no compromise; it’s one or the other. As they say “you can’t have your cake and eat it too!”

Well, that’s kind of bullshit. Who just buys cake to look at it? I know damn well I can have my cake and eat it too, that’s why I buy a fucking cake, to eat it. Retards.

Anyways. I bet those reading to this point are thinking “Maybe he’s talking about a job?” “Maybe he’s thinking about moving?”

No, it just isn’t that simple. This is something far closer to my heart than you could imagine. I’m contemplating giving up PC gaming.

Yes, you heard me.

Even typing that makes me shiver in fear. It is unheard of to even imagine those words coming out of my fingers. But I stop and think about it and realize it is SUCH an expensive hobby. See, my current computer can run most modern games at a reasonable level, but sadly it’s quickly becoming dated. Even worse, it’s an older motherboard without PCI-Express, which means I can’t simply just buy a nice graphics card to solve my woes. No, I’m going to have to build a new PC, pretty much.

Thoughts of Dual Core AMD Processors make me giggle with glee. Gold plated RAM with heat syncs, oh mamma! The latest NVidia GTX card, yes please!

All this joy comes at a hefty price though, and sadly in 2 years, I’ll be repeating this process.

So, I was giving it thought. The Xbox 360 is on par with today’s best machines graphically. It’s only $400, compared to the $1500+ I’d be spending building a new machine. More and more PC games are being migrated over to console platform, and there’s some truly great ones now (cough - Ghost Recon, Morrowind). For the price of this new computer, I could be buying an Xbox 360, some games, and a nice last gen. 720p HDTV.

But wait, the craziness doesn’t stop there!

I’m thinking about moving over to, wait for it… wait for it.. APPLE. Yes. I’m considering replacing my everyday PC with a Mac Mini or something along those lines. Since I’m not gaming, all I really need is a system that can play DVD’s, AIM, Office apps, and whatnot. It fits the bill nicely and is actually pretty cheap!

So yeah, lots of changes coming up. What do you think?
