Wow, I forgot how completely exhausting the SWE conference is. I always forget that I'm actually kind of a shy person and meeting that many strangers in such a short amount of time is absolutely draining.
We drove down to Baltimore (!) on Wednesday night - my car arrived at about 2am. The next morning we headed to the SWE conference for a Welcome Collegiate Luncheon (a.k.a. the Raytheon and John Deere commercial) and I went to the Region F meeting. I don't see myself as getting more involved in SWE at Olin, but maybe I'll get more involved after I graduate. I do like SWE.
The career fair opening was fairly exciting. Caterpillar had a sweet booth and I got to try out using one of their tractor things. I found a couple opportunities that I want to follow up on. There are two power plants in Baltimore that I'd like to work at - either the trash-powered Wheelabrator plant or the coal-powered Constellation plant. Then I found a really cool opportunity with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission - it's super competitive, but it would be cool to be in San Francisco so I figure I'll apply. Maybe then I can hang out with the
Flaming Lotus Girls (yay for women welders). I also kind of want to go to Burning Man even though everyone on the internet says it is shitty. I like stuff like that.
On Friday, I went to a really cool session on Construction Engineering. Maybe I should go into construction - it sounds super awesome. I like being outside and I like doing hands on things. I think I might take the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
I also went to the LGBT panel, which was a little depressing. Apparently most gay people in engineering are closeted. Ugh. I did get to meet the only openly lesbian past president of SWE though. That was pretty cool.
Friday night, I ended up just going out to dinner in Ellicott City. No Hellogoodbye concert :(
Today, I was pretty done with the conference so I stayed at home and did work. That was pretty excellent. I sort of did work and ate a lot of gingerbread. I eventually got dressed and headed over to Celebrate SWE! which was actually pretty fun. Region F even won the spirit award! That was completely unexpected.
Next year, the conference will be in Long Beach, CA.
