Chapter 8
PG-13
Somewhere in Iraq, 3 soldiers were found near starvation and dehydration; they were all unconscious and were, the rescuers found, dehydrated and were near starvation as well. Water was immediately given to the soldiers as their brothers in arms carried them back to their base after their very long trek after them, “Well, looks like there’s gonna be some very happy people back home tonight.”
The three soldiers were sent to an American base in Germany where they were given full medical treatment; they stayed for two weeks before finally being allowed to go home, though they all appeared very skinny and undernourished.
The plane landed in New York City one Sunday evening at 8:00. The soldier stepped off the plane and looked around. She sighed; there was no one here celebrating the fact that three soldiers had survived an airplane crash and the weather for three weeks; no one here who cared that they had seen their best friends die in front of them. Why should anyone care? They were back here, safe from all of that; safe from the fear that anytime they took to the skies in an airplane it would be shot down, safe from the fear that they may never see their loved one again as they lay dieing in a desert. She shook her head, adjusting to civilian life was going to be hard; she left the base, flagged a cab and gave the directions to her mother’s house, it was time to be alive again.
Casey sighed as she looked in the mirror, Liv had told her to get dressed up for their date tonight but no other details; she gave her hair and dress one final once over before deciding she looked alright when Liv buzzed up, “Who is it?” Casey asked very sweetly.
“Your white knight in shining armor, let me up Case,” Liv smiled into the intercom, wondering just what Casey would be wearing.
A few minutes later Casey opened the door to find a very nervous Liv openly gazing at her with a look that Casey thought clearly said Liv wanted Casey very badly. “Wow, Casey you look gorgeous…” Casey was wearing a gorgeous little black dress that hugged her curves in all the right places, leaving Liv to stare open mouthed at Casey’s luscious pale skin against the black material, “Are you ready?”
“You have no idea, detective; no idea.” Liv, Casey thought, looked amazing herself in one of her classic button down shirts that she left just enough buttons open to give Casey quite a view of Liv’s own assets.
The two headed downstairs where Casey’s doorman hailed them a taxi. The two headed off to the restaurant, holding hands like teenagers on their way to the prom in the taxi.
The soldier sighed as she stared at the door in front of her, wondering about just what to say to her mother. Finally at a loss of what to say, she knocked on the door and anxiously awaited a response. Marisa Trent went to the door curious of just who could be coming here at this time of night, it could be Serena but she had left just an hour ago. She gasped when she opened the door and saw her daughter who had been missing for over a month and a half now standing there, “Alex?”
As Liv and Casey ate dinner they talked about little things that they knew were just boring conversation pieces, like the antics of Casey’s older brothers or the guys in the squad and their reactions if they told them that Olivia and Casey were a couple, “I bet Elliot wouldn’t be surprised, Cragen wouldn’t care, Fin would congratulate us and Munch would want details,” Liv was pleased with her assessment.
“I think Elliot would be a bit surprised, Cragen could care less, Munch would make a lewd comment and Fin would tell him to shut the hell up. What about Huang? I think he’d be happy for us,” Casey tilted her head as she looked at Liv, who smiled at her.
“I think Huang would be the least surprised, well that’s only if you don’t count Serena I guess.”
“Serena’s different; she’s my very best friend who also happened to help hook us up.”
“I always forget to thank her for that…”
“Don’t, please. I really don’t need the reminder; she likes to make fun of how we got together.”
Marisa had ushered Alex into her home before hugging her as tightly as possible, “I was so worried about you! They aren’t going to ask you to come back are they? I got your note, it was so reassuring to know you were alive; Serena must be thrilled you’re back.”
“Whoa, Mom, slow down. I missed you too, no I’m not returning to active duty, I’m glad you got my note and Serena doesn’t know yet.”
“Serena doesn’t know you’re back? Alex, every day that you’ve been missing she’s been going out of her mind wondering if that day was going to be the day she got a call from me saying they had found your body. How could you not tell her?”
“I thought she might have moved on, you know, found someone else; someone who’s there when she needs them.”
“She only wants you sweetheart; she come by here every day after work and sits and we talk, about you, work, you, Serena, me, you.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really; Serena loves you, Alex, and when she read your letter she cried for hours here on the couch, telling me how sorry she was she never told you that. Granted you never told her that either, but she felt like she had missed out on such a huge moment by not telling you how she feels.”
“When did you guys get the letter?”
“Yesterday.”
“Those idiots at the military; they never do communicate. We were found two weeks ago in the desert by some soldiers, we were given emergency medical attention before we were shipped off to Germany, then we were sent home yesterday. They can’t keep anything straight over there, seriously.” Alex frowned as she spoke, disgusted at the torture her mother had been through, “I’m sorry to leave so soon Mom, but I believe there’s a woman waiting for me across town; she just doesn’t know it yet.”
“Of course, go; spend time with your girlfriend. I love you sweetheart.”
“Love you too Mom. I missed you. I’ll see you tomorrow, alright?”
“Sounds wonderful, bye!”
Alex hailed a taxi to head to Serena’s apartment.
After dinner and a rather sinfully shared dessert, Casey and Liv headed outside where Liv guided them toward Central Park. “That was wonderful, Liv. What else do you have planned?”
“You’ll find out soon enough, Case; just trust me.”
“You know I trust you, Liv.” Casey wanted to say more, but held her tongue Serena was right, just follow your heart; forget what your brain is telling you. Liv noticed Casey seemed to be thinking so she took that moment to get the carriage she had requested over to them, “Liv, a carriage ride in Central Park? That is so romantic!”
“I’m glad you approve, Casey.” Very glad, actually; very glad and I want to rip that dress from your body right now and make love to you like you deserve… “Shall we go, then?” Liv helped Casey up into the carriage before climbing up herself and wrapping her arms possessively around Casey’s waist as they took in the sights and sounds of the park at night.
The cab ride to Serena’s, Alex felt, took forever. Once they finally got there she paid the driver a very generous tip before hurrying up the steps as someone exited Serena’s building. Thrilled that she wouldn’t have to buzz Serena to get in, Alex took the stairs three at a time up to Serena’s floor; the fifth. Soon she was standing outside Serena’s door, wondering just what to say to the beautiful blonde. Finally deciding it didn’t matter, Alex knocked on the door. “Who is- Alex? Oh my god!” Serena wrapped her arms around Alex, both shocked and happy at the same time as she held her girlfriend in her arms for the first time in six months.
“Umm, Serena? If you let go I’m not gonna disappear,” Alex smiled as she pulled out of Serena’s grasp, “so can I come in?”
Serena practically pulled Alex into her apartment, “Of course; I just can’t believe that you’re here, in front of me.”
“Well believe it, and this time I’m not going anywhere.” Alex wrapped her arms around Serena, holding her flush against her own body.
Serena pulled away, “Alex there’s something I have to tell you…”
Casey’s head lay against Liv’s shoulder as they enjoyed their ride around Central Park, “Casey?”
“Hmm?”
“I need to tell you something. I’ve been avoiding this for a long time, and I think it’s finally time I said it.”
“Alex…”
“Casey…”
“I love you.” The words were uttered simultaneously from two completely different areas within the city in two completely different settings, but their impact was the same.
“Serena,”
“Liv,”
“I love you too.” Casey tilted her head as she plundered Liv’s mouth with a passion born of a week of longing, while across town Alex and Serena began the same dance with a passion born of fear, anguish, and six long months of longing and aching for one another.
